You can start scaling your business without having core values and mission in place. Especially in the early stages when you're just a small team, the excitement of "starting something together" is the glue that aligns everybody. As the team grows and it becomes more difficult to imprint the culture into new hires by merely making them part of the team, it's beneficial to make the core value and the purpose of the company more explicit.

Aligning your team when scaling a startup is crucial for maintaining focus, maximizing efficiency, and ensuring everyone is working towards the same goals. Here are several strategies you can employ: Clearly Define Goals and Objectives: Establish clear and measurable goals for the company as well as for individual teams and team members. Make sure everyone understands what success looks like and how their role contributes to the larger objectives. Communicate Regularly and Transparently: Maintain open lines of communication across all levels of the organization. Regularly update your team on the company's progress, challenges, and changes in direction. Encourage feedback and create a culture where people feel comfortable expressing.

Don't waste time creating job descriptions. These lengthy bullet point list of tasks add zero clarity. Instead, we have to focus on outcome/results for each role. In the start-ups/scale-ups I coach, we only define a handful of job accountabilities and the expected outcomes. An example for the role of Sales Director: Accountability: New accounts >100k annual revenue Outcome: 5 new accounts (super green), 3 new accounts (green), 2 new accounts (red). It's crystal-clear for everybody - role occupant and colleagues - what's expected of the Sales Director. This drives alignment.

Clearly stated responsibilities and end goals at each level of hierarchy is a must. Standardization of repeated tasks is the key to scale at large. Keep the team highly motivated to align with vision of organisation and encourage them to help each other.

Communication is certainly key to developing a team. Having people around you you can trust is vital and regular team roundtables whether it be in the office our a location can create conversations rather than memo boards and less personal discussions.

The meeting rhythm is the backbone of driving alignment in teams. Let's look at the leadership team, their meeting rhythm, and its what's on the agenda: Daily (5min) - What's everybody's #1 priority today. Weekly (60min) - Progress towards quarterly goals, blockers, customer & employee feedback Quarterly (2-4 hours) - Goals for next quarter, major initiatives to support goals Annual (1 day) - Strategic goals next year, major initiatives, goals Q1 / major initiatives If you stick to the meeting rhythm, this drives massive alignment. And more importantly, gets the team to execute your strategy.

The best way to empower and engage your team: Have them set the (quarterly) goals themselves. Provide only guidance and a reminder of the annual strategic goals and the overall strategy - the attractive future state of the company - you are all working towards. Micro management kills motivation and engagement. Autonomy in finding your own way to achieve the objectives boosts it.

One thing all leadership teams of successfull start-ups and scale-ups do: They talk to customers every week and share what they learned in the weekly leadership meeting. Here are 4 questions every leader can ask the customer (in person/Zoom): 1. How are you doing? 2. What's going on in your industry/neighborhood. 3. What do you hear about our competitors? 4. How are we doing? Powerful learnings await. Imagine how fast you can react to what your customers say if each member of the leadership does that each week! Puts you ahead of your competition.

don't rush into fast hires just to get bodies in, the consequences of taking on someone that doesn't share your ethos and aspirations can be catastrophic for your business.

Create a dynamic environment that it is safe for your team to communicate to each other without repercussions. While it sounds easy, it becomes harder and harder as demands on team begin to increase exponentially. Practice listening to each other with empathetic versus defensive mannerisms. Often times, the path a startup changes as the market truly reacts to the value proposition. That can be harder for some than others to accept, but if they are comfortable airing that lack of comfort they have a higher probability to grow too.
