When tagging your AWS resources, it is important to use descriptive keys and values easy to understand. This will make it easier to find and understand your tagged resources. It is important to maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of your tagged resources.

Personalmente, pienso que, por muy importantes que sean los costos, hay que darle un punto más de importancia a la seguridad, ya que un problema en este sentido puede echar por tierra meses de trabajo y de ahorro en optimización de costos. Por supuesto, esto pasa por conocer muy bien la infraestructura y conocer bien el negocio al que da servicio. A partir de ahí se podrá establecer una buena estrategia de gobernanza (etiquetado, chargeback, etc.) que ayude a implementar unas buenas políticas de seguridad y de optimización de costos. A partir de ahí, simplemente, realizar un buen mantenimiento y una revisión periódica en busca de oportunidades de ahorro, sin descuidar el cumplimiento de las políticas de seguridad establecidas.

Observability tools must be used to size and monitor cloud environments effectively. This can aid cloud engineers in right-sizing environments to ensure systems meet SLAs while reducing unnecessary costs that come from overly designed environments.

Balancing cost optimization with security in AWS starts with a clear understanding of cloud usage. Analyzing usage patterns using AWS Cost Explorer helped me identify areas where costs could be reduced without compromising security. For instance, pinpointing underutilized EC2 instances led to downsizing them appropriately, reducing costs while maintaining necessary security measures.

Each Public Cloud provides its specific security tools for each type of resource used. I believe that a good way to balance the costs generated by some of these tools is to know and have an updated inventory of all resources used so that only the security tools that make sense for that particular environment are used, thus not generating unnecessary costs.

El modelo de precios es primordial. Siempre que se pueda, es mejor pagar precios de RI o SP que precios on-demand. Las instancias spot pueden suponer un ahorro brutal en cargas de trabajo que soporten el ser interrumpidas en cualquier momento. Por otra parte, hay opciones más sutiles, como la la utilización de procesadores Graviton o ARM que, si bien no implica un descuento tan grande como las RI, SP o instancias spot, a largo plazo puede suponer un buen ahorro. Como mencionaba en otro punto, también se debe considerar, en ocasiones, la opción más simple, de apagar y encender la infraestructura que no se utiliza en determinados horarios. Por último, cambiar el Iaas por PaaS o, incluso, por serverless, puede ser una buena opción, también.

Select an appropriate pricing model based on your workload characteristics (e.g., On-Demand, Reserved Instances, or Savings Plans). Leverage spot instances for non-critical, fault-tolerant workloads to take advantage of cost savings.

Selecting the most cost-effective pricing model while ensuring security is crucial. I leveraged AWS Reserved Instances for predictable workloads, which offered lower costs than on-demand pricing. Simultaneously, I ensured these instances were secured with the appropriate security groups and IAM roles, balancing cost savings with robust security.

AWS beat the market to the "Cloud race" by four years, and as a result, they know what works out the best for them - and I've seen major cloud providers try to replicate their offerings. By the rule of thumb: 1) Ensure that you aren't using the root account with just a password. 2) Create other IDs, and ensure MFA is used for any task that has to be carried out. 3) Attach the required IAM permissions to the account, and not one more. Differentiate between the permissions added to a developer's account as opposed to someone who's into SRE or DevSecOps. 4) AWS' security hub is a godsend for SRE folks since it helps with continuous monitoring, security posture, automated responses, and aggregating security findings from multiple platforms.

Adhere to the principle of least privilege for IAM roles and permissions. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for enhanced access control. Regularly audit and review security group configurations to ensure minimal exposure.

Actually, the most important practices in security are quite easy to implement. Forget you have a root user unless you really need it to make changes on the account itself. The same with admins: do not use it on a daily basis. Use, instead, users with enough privileges (minimum necessary) to perform the needed tasks. Another thing to consider is that users have to have, when applicable (temporal collaborations, third-party users, etc.), an expiration date that can be extended if required. Some policies, like not allowing to deploy resources on specific regions, with specific sizes, etc. Some tools like Control Tower can help manage all these measures across multiple accounts. From here, your security staff can add more specialized measures.

Adhering to AWS security best practices doesn't have to be costly. I implemented measures such as multi-factor authentication, encryption, and regular security audits without significant additional costs. Utilizing AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) to control access to AWS services and resources effectively enhanced security without impacting the budget.

Hay muchas estrategias que se pueden utilizar para optimizar costos y seguridad en la nube. Los clásicos (reservas y savings plans) son un buen método para obtener ahorros inmediatos (con las precauciones adecuadas, ya que una reserva o un savings plan sin utilizar puede ser un gran lastre durante meses o, incluso, años). De hecho, a veces, es mejor apagar y encender un servidor que hacer una reserva que lo cubra. Set up billing alerts to be notified of unexpected cost increases. Conduct regular reviews of your AWS usage and adjust resources accordingly. Stay informed about new AWS features and pricing changes that may impact your costs.

Tras realizar las acciones más importantes de optimización, es clave realizar un seguimiento continuo, tanto para encontrar nuevas oportunidades de optimización, como para asegurarnos que las ya implementadas siguen cumpliendo su función y aportando los resultados esperados. Es muy típico que, sin el conocimiento del departamento de FinOps, se cambie el tipo de una máquina y que, como resultado, las RI dejen de aplicarse, resultando en un aumento de coste. Además, deben configurarse presupuestos y alertas, combinados con etiquetas, para controlar el consumos de entornos, departamentos, etc. Si no se es diligente en la revisión y evaluación continua de la optimización, hay un riesgo importante de, como poco, volver al estado inicial.

Regular reviews and adjustments to the AWS environment ensured ongoing cost optimization without compromising security. Periodic assessments using tools like AWS Trusted Advisor identified opportunities for both cost savings and security enhancements. Regularly updating security configurations and cost-saving measures in response to changing requirements maintained an optimal balance.

My all time fav topic! Relation b/w cloud security & low cost is like Tom&Jerry! They must coexist but at the same time, someone always wins. Security services like WAF, EventTrails, Auditing & IDP/IPS come with a high cost because cloud vendors use very good quality algorithms to build them. Low cost infra is tricky to achieve if security is implemented. If budget is "really" tight, advice is to opt for open source/third party tools like Greenbone, Nessus etc. These tools can be integrated in cloud and are cheaper than in-house services. There's always a "compromise" in your architecture when it comes to adjusting a security product in low cost. Although, investing in security is always worthy for your business, just go for it!

Cost Optimization isn't at odds with security. If your workloads aren't viable because of the costs of minimum-security services or are otherwise impeded by your optimization; your workloads just aren't viable. In general, this isn't a compromise or tradeoff situation, you should be able to support a baseline of security based on the risk tolerance of the organization and data while still optimizing the workload for cost using the AWS tools listed in this article.

In addition to these steps, consider leveraging AWS's native tools like AWS Shield for DDoS protection, which offers cost-effective security enhancement. Staying updated with AWS’s new services and pricing models can uncover additional opportunities for cost savings and security improvements. Also, training the team on cost-effective security practices is essential. Finally, engaging in AWS user communities and forums can provide insights and best practices for balancing cost and security effectively.
