How can you build consensus in a debate?

If you want to really find consensus you need to give up on the idea of the debate, which is centred in winning an argument. The key to consensus is finding shared meaning through true dialogue. Dialogue literally means 'through shared meaning'. Dialogue starts with respect for other party, and suspending your assumptions (what you feel is right or the answer) and listening deeply to understand. Once this happens a bridge can be built to enable a shared meaning to start to form. Through this shared meaning consensus can be found.

Disagreements are inevitable due to individual differences in character and perspectives. The crux lies in leveraging these differences to forge agreements, even if it necessitates sacrifices from conflicting parties. Whether within family dynamics or professional settings, prioritizing harmony and compromise fosters cohesion. Adopting a broader, future-oriented mindset, devoid of selfish motives, facilitates consensus-building.

Begin by identifying the specific outcome you wish to achieve from the debate. This could be persuading others to adopt your viewpoint, reaching a compromise, or simply fostering a better understanding of the issue at hand. One team will come with its perspective / solution and the opponents will argue and come up with a better solution. At the end of the day, the team finding the wining solution after the argumentative is the wining team.

I cannot overemphasize on Deliberation. This is creating room for all perspectives to be included in the debate with a goal of not outsmarting one another, but placing all factors on the table. This accelerates mediation and an agreement in both parties to a consensus

Despite the best efforts of all parties involved, sometimes it is not possible to build consensus in a debate between or among direct stakeholders. However, some degree of consensus can still be achieved if both sides can agree that failure to initially gain agreement will lead to a mutually agreed upon arbitration framework or some other adjudication mechanism.

I think a great way to prepare for a debate is to try to defend the other side's point of view. This way you will be able not only to understand and empathize your debaters, but also to be prepared for any arguments they may use. Additionally, it will be easier for you to find a common ground to look for a agreed conclusion in case the debate does not come to an end.
