How can you build relationships with colleagues who speak a different language?

I found that when we were talking to one another informally, foreign language speakers liked it when I asked them about how to say a few words and phrases in their language. Then tried to pronounce what they said myself, which usually produced some smiles and laughter.

I find it easy when you learn a phrase or two in their language and attempt to use it in a conversation with them as it would help break the ice even if done incorrectly. Another important factor is patience in trying to understanding them there could be a lot of tools that could help but the action of them knowing you are patient will also bring them half-way.

For the past years I was honored to travel for business between Latinamerica / USA / Canada and Europe… a few things I learned… Always be respectful to the people and their beliefs / traditions and ways of thinking. Taste local food and if possible speak their language (or a couple of words at least !). Learn about their culture… smell the place, smile and smile, dedicate quality time to understand how they live. I want to thank to all those colleagues and friends that I have created in more than 13 countries. Life is short, meet people and be open minded.

No matter which language they speak, be respectful to everyone and you can understand by their gestures and use clear and simple communication for better understanding and respect their values and culture. Don't forget to put a smile on your face which will make them feel more confident, happy and comfortable.

Normalmente funciona para toda comunicação, inclusive com os colegas que falam outra língua. - Família: tenha interesse em saber a história da família, como o lugar de onde vem, o significado do nome, quem são as pessoas, onde vivem agora. - Ocupação: questione sobre o dia a dia da pessoa no trabalho. Ainda que a ocupação seja a mesma, trabalhar em lugares diferentes gera experiências diferentes. - Recreação: é o que a pessoa faz fora do trabalho. Procure saber quais são os hobbies, as preferências; explore os pontos em comum. - Sonhos: todo mundo tem uma ideia de futuro. Que tal falar a respeito?

Some key points from my experience: 1. Take time to understand the culture in which you are operating. Take the necessary time to immerse yourself in the associated rituals; 2. Listen more and talk less. Also when you do speak to slowly and double-check the intended audience understands you; 3. Impart empathy - remember you are a guest in their environment so act accordingly; 4. Praise small celebrations in public if appropriate; 5. Ask for help - don't come into a foreign environment believing you have all the answers. The answers probably exist in your audience if you choose to ask them for their opinions

Written communication is more important in communication with a different cultural and linguistic group as it eliminates the problem on account of different tones and accents

More simpler - more easier! or study their own language and it will help you more later. The choice is yours and actually is good benefits to you

In my perspective, we should try to talk to that person by hand gestures, and ask him what he calls for that particular gesture. During a course of time you and he both will be able to understand each other and communicate better.

The smartest people I worked with use simple words to communicate, and they do not need to impress anyone with elaborated sentences. Unnecessary complexity might lead to barriers and exclusion feelings. Simple and straightforward communication is the key. In addition, I am a big fan of communication visuals, as I believe they help to focus on what really matters.

It's perfectly normal, and even wise, to seek confirmation when communicating with someone from a different linguistic background. I've found that there's no shame in asking for clarification, requesting a repetition or even suggesting an alternative way of expressing a thought. Nothing is more detrimental than nodding in agreement when uncertainty lingers. Always ensure that both parties are on the same page by confirming understanding—it's a small step that can prevent a multitude of misunderstandings.

I totally agree with you , We need to speak in a simple language, repeat some phrases, and avoid speaking in a rapid manner. Body language is also important to communicate some things.

Today something interesting just happened, one of our developers who has some problem with speaking English in stand-up meetings, (also I talked to him before and shared some advice with him about his English improvement, but he didn't care about it!!) has removed from a task which he loved to work on it, by the Tech-lead! He was so sad, but I supported him, and I told the team that I wanted this guy to do this task! After the meeting, he called me and told me that he wanted to work on his English ability! I was surprised and also happy. I think we're going to solve two issues with this decision...

One thing I found helpful is confirmations in most aspects of life. However in regards to this topic it is so important because you don’t want to go through it all to find out the other person wasn’t understanding and we even do it with the same language when we look for those body language movements to confirm they are receiving it the way we are intending it to come across. So it makes sense that we would want to go through the same behaviours in regards to a different language.

Being patient is a huge key factor when it comes to colleagues and team members with different languages, I have noticed through my experience that some colleagues start very slow and very shy to speak English, but just by time maybe around three months, they will get better a d you will mote comfortable commuting to each other and the language barrier will mostly disappear,l.

I used to work in a multinational environment, and for a certain point of view, I'm still working in a multinational one, being in someone else shoes is the most important attitude to establish a relationship with people of different culture. Only in this way you can enrich your experience and your soul. Is there that you can create a very positive atmosphere.

Some years back, I read an article that clearly captured the fact that Gareth Bale's inability to learn the Spanish language, annoyed some of his colleagues and the fans in extension. I wasn't there- neither was I opportuned to speak to Gareth. However, it is possible his colleagues were impatient and inconsiderate. It could equally be that they felt Gareth did not invest enough effort or show much intent to learn. Be interested and show respect when you identify something that is different on your country. As you learn more about it you will understand why each country is different and you can import such aspects to your life or work environment.

The beneficiary of the communication needs to lead the communication, they need to find the common ground. Family is a good starting point but even more so in developing countries. Start with that, built respect and trust then follow onto other common ground, its amazing how much you can learn from someone without exchanging a common language word.

Remain positive and try to convey your viewpoint with sign language! Although it will be little difficult (and sometimes even be annoying), we need to be patient. Also we need to understand the cultural practices of others. Learn what is cool and what is strictly NO in their culture. For example, how to greet, or say good bye.... Wishing on their festivals/ occasions can also enhance the warmth in relationships.

To build relationships with people who speak different languages could thrive best if we apply the principle of Culture Relativism- which says that no one culture is better than the other. In same vein, no one language is better than the other. To break up the barrier placed by the difference in language, it is good to show respect and approach our colleagues in a manner that does not make one language seem superior to the other. This way, all barriers would come down and open the pathways to better relationships and growth in all ramifications.
