A mentee can have the problem statements or issues he/she is facing in a particular domain shared with the mentor before the session begins. The mentor would be able to provide his feedback and relevant experience , if he/she gets ample time to ponder into the same. I had a great mentor who taught me about questionnaire design and he acted like a college professor. He was quite direct and helped me grow in that area of the profession. Another mentor taught me about presenting the final data analysis to clients and he was extremely casual, fun, told jokes and was very conversational. This helped me to relax more during presentations that can stressful. Two completely different approaches and both taught me a great deal. The common factor in both relationships was ongoing, regular feedback - sometimes you don't want to hear critiques - but the more feedback you receive, the more you will grow and improve.

There is nothing worse than a mentee being surprised they did not reach a certain goal. This happened to me early in my career as this specific goal was never discussed in our relationship. It took me 3 more months to reach that goal and delayed a promotion. My point being, be very clear with goals and make sure you are on track. If you are falling behind a bit at least you know where you stand.

Mentors in research are often senior colleagues at work or professors who are teaching working professionals. Speaking from personal experience, I can vouch that technical knowledge is often inaccurate if not paired with the work one is doing. Mentor needs to challenge the mentee's knowledge and problem solving skills through data, by linking knowledge to real-life business problems.
