Adding in reasonable additions like SSO, 2FA w/ challenge cycles, and SCIM provisioning can all work together to create a very powerful IAM program that can be defined in the company access policy. NEVER forget to include human reviews on these policies and the execution thereof. Things will break and you CANNOT solely rely on automation. It needs to be verified by human eyes from time to time.

This one is big but usually at bottom of the list. I am a HUGE fan of security frameworks, mostly because they help ensure gaps are filled. Following a valid framework (ISO, SOC2, FedRAMP, etc.) almost always includes policies. If you work on these policies and iterate often, you can cover IAM in an access policy and legitimately get cross department buy in upfront which helps significantly during implementation.
