How can you create opportunities for underrepresented groups in social impact work?

Identifying gaps in social impact work involves scrutinizing those demographics, backgrounds, and roles and comparing them with the communities served. Successful organizations and leaders globally have emphasized diverse representation and inclusive participation. They recognize that barriers like education, skills, networks, and cultural or language differences often hinder underrepresented groups. Tackling these barriers, they prioritize needs assessment and engage the right stakeholders, including local governments and women leaders, to devise and scale solutions. This approach ensures broader inclusivity and enhances the effectiveness and sustainability of social impact initiatives.

¿Por qué no tenemos suficientes mujeres en posiciones de alta dirección y en consejos de administración en empresas mexicanas y a nadie parece impórtale mucho? Tal vez porque el discurso no ha sido el correcto. O quizá (me estoy aventurando) en vez de verlo como un tema de justicia social o de amor, debemos verlo desde la perspectiva de negocio. Y para muestra, baste un botón: las empresas con una fuerza de trabajo más equilibrada por género superaron a sus pares con brechas de género más amplias en hasta 2 puntos porcentuales anuales entre 2013 y 2022, según un estudio de BlackRock del índice MSCI World.

Dentro del mundo de la Recolección de Basura (donde me desempeño actualmente) creo que la identificación de las Brechas es mucho más complejo que en un negocio más acotado. Nuestros beneficiarios son personas de diferentes niveles socioeconómicos y los financiadores son tan diversos como los antes descritos. Creo que esta identificación sirve siempre y cuando exista un producto definido y un mercado acotado.

I'd like to add teenagers as another underrepresented group. I'm a school teacher and have the opportunity to hear their ideas, see what they can do when they have the right motivation and guidance, and the synergy they can create when they have real chances to take action. Most of the time, adults remain in our natural adult-centric perception of reality around us and consider teenagers' opinions and potential less valuable simply because they are younger than us. We tend to impose our worldview, minimize their concerns, despise their preferences, and reject their questioning of the status quo we contribute to sustain.

In my opinion, before the first step mentioned, "Identify the gaps", we have to understand exactly who are those underrepresented groups, who are the people we are facing, what are each group's characteristics? And so on.

Engage in communities where underrepresented groups are actively participating. These communities may involve groups operating within a specific industry or associations focused on a particular topic. Being actively involved in these settings can assist you in gaining a better understanding of the groups' needs and building trust.

Um dos primeiros passos é a compreensão das necessidades dos grupos sub-representados e quem são esses grupos. A escuta é a ferramenta mais poderosa e deve ser feita de maneira a evitar estereótipos, portanto por meio de pessoas especializadas ou que receberam treinamento.

Según mi experiencia en grupos de trabajo, la mejor forma con la que he construido relaciones duraderas y fuertes, es cuando conocemos diversos aspectos de las personas, sus miedos, sus objetivos, sus fortalezas, debilidades, etc. En este aspecto creo que siempre irán funcionando mejor las reuniones más intimas, donde existen pocos participantes. Incluso las dinámicas que hacen conversar a dos personas por lo general resultan mucho más cómodo para personas que poseen una personalidad más introvertida. Creo que para empezar es lo mejor, después se puede ir integrando de a poco más participantes o realizar foros más grupales.

My space to make my contribution is school, or any other educational environment that connects adults with teenagers. The real challenge is to tear down the natural asymmetry that entails the traditional educational system. However, a teaching-learning environment is a privileged space to listen to teenagers' concerns and ideas and create with them plans to transform their reality. It is time to open the classical classroom and explore other ways to teach concepts, but also develop commitment with their community, and provide them with tools that empower them as real subjects of change.

Una forma es compartir experiencias y conocimientos entre personas de la misma comunidad y también invitar a personas externas que ayuden. Incentivar las alianzas entre grupos y organizaciones donde se complementen en suplir sus necesidades. Crear espacios temáticos y colaborativos.

En los 20 años de experiencia profesional, he presenciado el desarrollo de generaciones de jóvenes talentos y el ejercicio activo de ejecutivos, miembros de directorios, emprendedores, etc. Siempre en sus historias se han destacado las competencias y destrezas para tener un espacio y desarrollarse en las organizaciones. Creo que se abre una ruta poderosa si lograramos indagar, develar y destacar también las limitaciones de las personas y sus biografías buscando aspectos que diferencian, hacen único a cada persona y muestran la diversidad actual de grupos que aparentemente están menos representados, pero en realidad sí existen, están presentes, pero no están declarados o expuestos en el relato público. La invitación es a ser más honestos.

First examine the touchpoints within the journey, which will vary in every type of work. There may be opportunities to engage with the next generation and build partnerships with high schools and academic institutions. There may be opportunities to connect with under-represented communities, and you can examine how to meet them where they're at - the right events and platforms. Rather than trying to forge a new, unfamiliar connection, instead look to see what is naturally occurring and examine how you can open the door further.

In my opinion, we need to bring role models of under presented groups to the light. Make them visible, these role models can help create a path for others to follow and lead. This can happen only by challenging the norms with the right rational.My favorite quote speaks volumes “People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”!

An inclusive environment is possible when byas are investigated and a new culture arises. The clearest example relates to people suffering from mental disorders. To expand knowledge and terminology is critical. A cultural path is beneficial for many reasons, and provides better communication and humanity in the "normal" team. The fear of diversity can be reduced turning the attention from problems to resources, as individual talents, attitudes, motivation.

Uma prática que pode ser útil sao rodadas de diálogo entre distintos setores para troca de experiências. Outro ponto muito relevante é a governança e a mensuração de impacto do negócio e da prática de inclusão dos grupos sub-representados.

EMPATÍA, una valiosa emoción que no suele sobrar en muchas organizaciones, y con ello me refiero a utilizar este recurso como herramienta de trabajo, pues la empatía permite atender las propuestas de los otros y enriquecer las propias. Respetando la opinión de nuestros colaboradores conseguimos ejercer un liderazgo silencioso, pero muy eficaz. Nadie, ni los más brillantes profesionales, son tenedores de las mejores estrategias . El liderazgo ejercido desde el respeto a diferentes perspectivas tiene el camino libre hacia el éxito, pero lleva su tiempo, pues se trata de una percepción por parte del grupo que no se alcanza a corto plazo.

Soft skills are nothing but relationship. It'is difficult to communicate, even when there is a common cultural background. Uphill running is a way to building muscle. Effective communication with "different" people is a way for organizational and individual empowerment. Benefit is a better management of supposed problematic behaviors, between "normal" members of team. Feed-back are critical to collect lessons learned and to upgrade consciousness. Theory and method for giving and receiving feed-back is the first step, with a rigorous top-down release.

This year, we have worked under one major goal: Get students involved in politics and social activism. We don't encourage students to align themselves to one or another political program but to reshape the idea of politics and social activism. We believe that citizens have the power to bridge the gaps that deprive parts of the population of their rights. It is a way to strengthen the exercise of citizenship in contemporary democracies.

¿Y si no sólo es un tema de brechas, rutas, relaciones y aprendizaje continuo? Me pregunto si una persona de un colectivo subrepresentado llega de igual forma a una oferta/oportunidad que otra a nivel de canales, de conocimiento para el acceso. ¿Tenemos claramente identificados los journeys de los diferentes candidatos? O ¿estamos asumiendo que seremos capaces de cubrir las ofertas con el volumen mayoritario y entonces aparcamos esa igualdad de oportunidades?

Creo que el crecimiento de las personas no debería estar condicionado sólo al área de trabajo de cada cual. Muchas veces el aprender nuevas cosas, indistintamente cuales sean, crean nuevas formas de ver todo, tener visiones desde las diversas disciplinas ayuda a crear cosas nuevas. En la cocina cuando mezclas ciertos productos logras construir asombrosas recetas que no se parecen en lo más mínimo a los productos iniciales, esto crea muchas veces las soluciones a problemas eternos que no han encontrado su solución con las mismas herramientas de siempre.
