How can you demonstrate your understanding of your target audience through your pitch?

Research is always great and needed, but a great way to take it further is to imagine someone in your real life who fits the target audience. Envision their needs, desires, and thought patterns. If this is hard to do, one action item to knowing your audience is getting out in the real world! In a world that is so technology-driven, getting away from the screen and engaging with people gives any marketer the inspiration and knowledge to understand an audience. One example of doing this is simply volunteering--bonus if it involves the target audience somehow.

I conduct a survey, make sure the questions are transparent then read the responses. Or, if I don't want to do a survey, I will go to my targeted audience and simply ask them directly what it is they're into, their values, what's important to them. listen to their needs, their wants. I look at the world through their lens to understand and do my best to let them know they will be heard. Furthermore, if they're willing to share their heart with me and expose what really gets their attention, I mess with THAT. I don't waste time trying to impress them with flashy reels, pricy streaming equipment and a back drop. I focus on what they told me is their heart and bring that to life in my content first, then work up to a sales pitch.

Research your target audience beforehand: use (current!) industry buzzwords, speak around pertinent industry challenges and do not overlook the human factor which everyone wishes to relate to. Keep these basics in mind and flesh out your presentation according to audience reactions. Most of all, engage in a conversation-type presentation, not a read-it-off-the-sheet same ol' boring moment. Know your subject and have fun, it engages any audience.

To effectively engage your target audience, conduct thorough research to understand their demographics, preferences, and behaviors. Tailor your pitch to their specific needs and demonstrate how your product or service addresses their pain points. Use empathic language that resonates with their concerns. Include testimonials or case studies to showcase the relevance and effectiveness of your solution. By highlighting the personalized value you provide, you can create a compelling connection that converts prospects into paying customers.

Speak their language, use familiar terminology, and highlight mutual goals to build rapport quickly. Encourage engagement and be open to feedback, refining your message based on audience response.

Using niche-specific language is a brilliant and subtle way to showcase your understanding and experience. It also helps you create a unique connexion with your audience.

The right tone and language and vocabulary are important. Example: My brand’s audience run heavy-duty commercial trucks. I can’t tell you how many pitches have gone straight in the trash because they talk about gasoline fuel. If you knew anything about our audience you would use the term “diesel” or the broader term “fuel.” And a caution about jargon and buzzwords. If you haven’t done a good job of researching your audience, overuse of these can be worse than just writing in plain English. Another example of pitches that go straight into the trash are ones with so much “corporateze” the meaning isn’t clear. More syllables are not automatically better.

In my experience the greatest writers (and speakers!) have a deep sense of EMPATHY and can see the world from different perspectives. So first do research so you understand your audience. Then you need to put yourself in their shoes and use language that will speak specifically to your audience and communicate your niche clearly WITHOUT getting caught in all the jargon.

In my experience, crafting your pitch, envision yourself stepping into the shoes of your target audience, seeing the world through their eyes, feeling their joys and struggles. Imagine you're sitting across from them, engaging in a heartfelt conversation rather than delivering a sales pitch. As you delve into research, it's akin to embarking on a journey of discovery, seeking to understand the intricacies of your audience's lives. You delve into demographic data, scour market research, and immerse yourself in their world, gaining insights into who they are and what makes them tick.

I have spent 16 years in French- and Portuguese-speaking African countries on Africa. My interpreter must match my tone. My communications in English must be formal.

This is pivotal. You absolutely have to communicate clearly the value you bring to your audience/ideal client/readers, etc. They have to be able to make a clear connection between your services and the positive results they will see from working with you. If they cannot clearly see that link, they are very unlikely to utilize your services. Make the conversation about them, their needs, their pain points, their hurdles, and how to you help them. Describe ow you can help them resolve those issues, save them time, save them money, increase their reach, connect with their audience, etc. It’s less about the details of your service and more about how your service is helpful to them. Focus on the client first.

In my opinion, you need to do some homework before you pitch. Research your market, segment your audience, tailor your message, use relevant data and examples, and engage your audience. First, gather data and insights about your potential audience, their needs, pain points, & preferences. Surveys & interviews can be good tools for this. Look at your competitors and see how they are serving the same market. Second, identify the different groups within your market that have distinct characteristics & behaviours to create customer personas that represent each segment. Finally, craft a message that speaks directly to your target segments & personas. Use a language that resonate with your audience & highlight the benefits of your solution.

You have to show you are adding value and you have to do it fast. Do it in the beginning of your pitch so that your audience will be interested. The best way to communicate that your idea adds value is to start with evidence. Tell your audience how the idea added value to you and they will listen.

Show the audience the benefits of your content and the value they will get from it. Getting to your Target Audience can only be done by providing value and communicating the same to them.

In this over-saturated market people are looking for reasons NOT to buy. By anticipating objections and reversing risks, we can actually help our audience understand whether the product/service we offer is right for them. It’s not necessarily a matter of “converting at all costs”. It’s like teaching a child something new… there are always doubts, objections, resistance to jump into the new experience… but by carefully holding their hand and explaining things you can lead them to the joy and thrills that come with the new experience. By leading your audience through their journey you can support them in the understanding of their own needs, the good itself and the brand/personality behind it…

Be aware of your audience's concerns and objections and try to address them directly during your presentation. Offer solutions or answers that show you understand their concerns. This helps to build trust and clarify possible doubts that may arise during your presentation.

In our pitch, we acknowledge and address any potential objections or risks that our target audience may have. By openly discussing and providing solutions to these concerns, we demonstrate our commitment to transparency and understanding. We proactively address any doubts or hesitations that our audience may have, showing that we have thought through potential challenges and are prepared to mitigate them. By being upfront about any risks and offering reassurances or strategies to overcome them, we build trust and credibility with our audience, ultimately increasing their confidence in our product/service.

Be Transparent. One of the ways I address objections and risks involved with my consistency coaching program is by being transparent about my process and what the program entails. I use FAQs and Social Proof from past students to support my programs. Also, during our discovery call session, I give my students to ask their questions about the program, to which I provide answers.

If you are a startup pitching to a jury, don't ever get defensive when a jury member reacts negatively to your pitch. Stay cool. Exude confidence. Be articulate, and address the concern.

Not only do you need a call to action, but your audience needs a vision of what is ahead and how they can accomplish it. If you partner with their organization, help them see why it’s important that you join together in a shared vision for success. Presenting a clear and actionable vision helps your audience move forward.

By providing a specific and actionable next step, we guide our audience towards a decision and encourage them to move forward in their journey with us. Our call to action is designed to be straightforward, enticing, and aligned with the goals of our pitch, ensuring that our audience knows exactly what to do next.

The most important features of a pitch are the tone of voice and mastery of the content to be pitched. Prepare well but always leave room for spontaneity. Feed off the energy of the environment you're in on the day of the pitch.

Be your audience. What's the bell curve and what are you targeting? Connect to and hold a point also that cannot be easily seen as a result. Use push language.

If you’re pitching an idea to an editor, in addition to understanding the audience/market you’re trying to reach, spend a little time researching the brand you’re pitching to. I get so many pitches that waste my time because someone apparently couldn’t even take the time to look at our website.

Find a common ground. Something personal that you may have in common and can small talk about in order to make a real connection. This will make them like you and want to hear more about what you have to say.
