How can you design Blockchain algorithms to be sustainable?

Sustainability of blockchain is directly proportional to the consensus mechanism used. Proof of Work (POW) consumes a significant amount of energy to solve complex mathematical problems, making it less sustainable compared to Proof of Stake (POS), which validates nodes based on staked coins or assets.

In my experience, PoS is a nice validation mechanism but one thing is not zo fair because people with no big wallets can't earn a fair share for their contribution to securing the network. As community leader of the StakeCoin project, I experimented with small wallets and low difficulty because I only staked with a small share of my total coins and attracted people with some free coins. The experiment failed because another member with a big wallet began to stake and got more than 90% of the daily stake reward. But I think the idea of fair PoS can be implemented with some kind of smart contract in combination with a small environmentally friendly PC or a VPS in the cloud. For securing a blockchain IMO it is not necessary to waste energy.

PoS variants are indeed the most effective method for now for securing the consensus layer from numerous types of attacks along with being sustainable. Proof of Authority (PoA) algorithms are also getting explored in this context. At the same time merge mining can also be considered using the AuxPoW methods in cases where PoW cannot be avoided where the block producers relies on the computations on an established network like Bitcoin. (eg: namecoin).

In my experience, the only way to mine with the PoW protocol is Green Mining with energy that can not be used for economic and environmental goals like H2 production. In that way, it can be a green converter of energy to money or other useful applications like encryption of data. PoW mining with energy that can be used for human consumption is the reason many people don't like Bitcoin and don't adopt the good aspects of Blockchain technology. These people also think PoS is bad for the environment so yes Green Mining is essential for the adoption of Blockchain and can contribute to a better world.

In my experience, some great cryptocurrency projects collapse because people can easily buy large shares in a coin and can dump them when they see a financial profit. I have thought about an ecosystem, called "the bottleneck" where only a small amount of coins can be sold and that is then the Proof of Stake reward. In this way can set a cash value for coin owners and they can earn base income by selling the stake reward and not the coins they own for the long term.
