I'd suggest reviewing options using VEVA tools such as weighted constraint analysis. Thinking long term flexibility and ease of expansion are also key considerations. The lowest capital investment is not always the best choice.

At my work experience in designing a transfer conveyor for molded Bumper parts for automotive cars ,the challenge was to address the material handling of diversity of injection molded bumpers, to transfer from machine to human. originally we had single piece bumpers and as the product evolved to suit changing customer needs and dynamic market conditions to face the competition, These bumpers design changed as multi piece. As Engineering team , we had the onus to maintain the productivity and harmony, inspiring us to design a conveyor suited to transfer both single piece & multi- piece bumpers ,thereby avoiding NVA of facility changeover, trouble free planning for floor manager,production of single piece harmony to sustain best productivity.

When you are designing a system, always design for X, here X is a subset of product,process,supplier, future products and more importantly operators both human and non-human, because you already invested huge amounts on the equipments you can not change it’s constraints without an additional investment and at the same time if your system is not user friendly for human operators, they will resent the adoption, so when ever you design a system you have to find a sweet spot that every support system should approve of, or else you looking at a system which needs continuous changes and additional investments finally you end up with a system which adds cost to company rather than adding value.

In my experience the standardization of material transfer systems will help and yes, it is an ongoing process so regular upgradation will help
