I find the “immutable infrastructure” architecture pattern to be the most useful. It forces encapsulation of complexity of multiple layers whilst bringing the benefit of additional security. Achieving “modularity” is a significant challenge .. something that we always aspire to but in the real world, always end up with “spaghetti”.

A few monitoring scenarios can be considered for implementation: (1) Communication failures between the pods where each pod represents a separate application service. (4) Remediation steps to be executed to quickly recover from the failure. (5) Learnings and how to avoid these types of failures in the future.

I can give a good example based on my experience with Azure. I'm quite sure that it can be transferable to other public clouds as well. Every application in Azure requires a storage (i.e., either Storage Account, or SQL, or no-SQL), Application Insights, Availability Test, Log Analytics Workspace, Key Vault, Alert Rules, and a dashboard. Keep them separate per application. Cloud allows us to go as granular as possible. Having all these resources created separately per application per environment is the best approach to maintainability. Provision infrastructure as a part of the application deployment from the same repo. Infra is a part of the solution, it has high cohesion with the app itself. Make sure the deployment is automated.

We have to invest in platform engineering to address cross-cutting concerns, e.g. A/B testing of business functions, Canary deployment, Security, Networking , telemetry, IaC etc. Some of these concerns are handled by using containers and Kubernetes. Service Mesh like Istio is also indispensable in designing such platform services. Platform engineering helps to keep same standards across the ecosystem, at the same alleviates the these workload off individual teams.
