Assessing the current level is important for cultivating project management skills in others. It provides a baseline understanding of the team's proficiency, identifying strengths and weaknesses. This assessment acts as a compass, guiding skill development initiatives.

Everyone has project management skills - some individuals may leverage more of them than others. In life, we project manage, we mitigate risk, we pivot when something happens, we stop and reassess the value, we monitor budgets and quality. Many people don’t see how their ‘non work’ skills transfer to work. Once shown, they are empowered and some become the best professional project managers.

I develop project management skills in others by empowering them with specific responsibilities. For instance, I delegate communication tasks to team members, encouraging them to create plans for engaging with vendors. This hands-on approach fosters their skills, ownership, and accountability, building competencies in planning, organizing, and monitoring projects. This not only enhances their growth but also strengthens our team's capabilities. When it's time to initiate communications, they're more confident since they devised the plan themselves.

Provide training and development opportunities. This could include sending employees to project management courses, providing them with access to online resources, or hiring a project management consultant to come in and train your team. Coach and mentor employees. This could involve providing one-on-one coaching to help employees develop their project management skills, or pairing them with more experienced project managers who can provide guidance and support. Firstly, evaluate the need for learning project management analyze the target audience and mindset of their quest or interest to learn project management and do a quick check on Leadership skills. Once analyzed, 1. Embrace Continuous Learning: Encourage learning through online courses, workshops, and books (e.g., "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries). 2. Foster Collaboration: Promote effective communication, active listening, and team-building activities like "The Marshmallow Challenge." or any other exploratory team-building activity and simulation. 3. Lead by Example: Demonstrate strong organization and time management skills, prioritize tasks, and utilize project management tools like Asana or Trello.

I find that project management can feel a bit overwhelming for people, so I like to keep it simple. I encourage people to break down the tasks involved in delivery, step-by-step, then put them in order so they can see the flow of the project as a whole. Sometimes that involves grouping things into deliverables / categories. I'd ask them to start with the first 'deliverable' that's needed. They'd list out which stakeholders need to be involved, any inputs that are needed, the tasks that are required and the order they need to be done in. They can then repeat this for each area of the project, before plotting timings against the list they've created, tracking back from the due date.

I find that having people keep a weekly track record of their celebrations and growth opportunities fosters great discussion. It encourages them to think critically on their own about what worked and what didn’t before you sit down to talk with them. Then you have an opportunity to praise their self-awareness and growth, and to naturally begin goal setting and identifying learning resources for the next project. This also helps incredibly well with having accessible written records for annual reviews, both from their perspective and yours!
