How can you effectively manage waste in a circular economy?

Nature has always run a circular 'economy', melted ice comes back as rain, carbon emitted is recaptured by plants, to return organic produce, which biodegrades back. It is the need for more material, all of which depends on non-renewable resources that started the linear economy and led to global warming. A circular economy is a material supply redesign that seeks to take minimum from the earth's limited resources, and at the same time envisages return the resources through a 'circular' material transformation strategy.

Circular Economy is nothing new. However, it has become a buzz word recently due to the alarming level of damage we are causing to the Mother Earth. We need to remind ourselves that we need to do the following and consistently, while preserving the limited resources, to make The Mother Earth Safe Habitat for the Next "n" Generations (n→∞ vision). -Segregation of waste. -Reduce, reuse, recycle. -Sharing is caring. Help the needy and seek help to reuse. -Whatever the waste lying around, need to find feasible technologies to create wealth from it though creation of safe to use products -Technologies through renewable resources: Need careful E2E analysis and a super long vision before commercializing them -list goes on :)

The idea of Circular economy comes from the term of churning the old and producing new.Upcycling recycling the new terms that we hear of are becoming very common and to me people want a change every 3 years inside their house or otuside therefore they want to replace their furniture's and other materialistic things if we start and make an alternative for the products that are being thrown to understands their usability in the sense to what extent it has been used and how we can reuse it and where?This will be beneficial for the people who are planning a makeover also the people who are looking to get a new furniture at a low price but explained well in advance about the usage.

The circular economy allows us to envision trash as a resource. We can eliminate waste and pollution while creating economic, social, and environmental value by closing loops and keeping materials in use. Effective waste management necessitates a paradigm shift—innovating across the value chain, leveraging data, and aligning incentives through legislation. Leading organisations, on the other hand, are paving the way with initiatives such as remanufacturing, upcycling, take-back programmes, and digital solutions to maximise resource flows. Waste is not an intrinsically wasteful resource, but rather a resource in the wrong place. With the correct framework, technology has the potential to catalyse a cleaner, more affluent future.

Real-world examples help me understand and explain a circular economy. We once worked on a food packaging redesign project. These materials were once single-use and non-recyclable. We redesigned packaging to be easily disassembled and recycled, reducing waste. This illustrates the first circular economy principle: designing out waste and pollution. Reimagining and redesigning products and systems can lead to more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, exemplifying a circular economy. This concrete example can help newcomers understand the concept.

The core concept of the Circular Economy challenges the traditional notion of waste by considering it as a valuable resource. This approach fosters not only a circular, but a regenerative economy that promotes the continuous use of resources.

Waste management is not just about reducing or eliminating resources waste but could bring opportunities for innovation, new supply chains and a platform to drive towards equitable economy.

The complex tango that we and our environment perform demands careful stewardship. As architects we must examine the whole lifecycle of the structures we design, from material procurement to eventual reuse or disintegration. A cyclical approach to resource management turns waste into opportunity. Our designs, like nature's unending cycles, can foster rejuvenation. With care and imagination, the constructed world can become a living system in which the discarded remnants of one component fuel the potential of another. In this sense, sustainable design replicates the giving and receiving that occurs between the earth and the sky, land and sea. Waste changes from end to beginning.

Furthermore, factors that should be taken into consideration are: - Firstly, there should be a rule or law stipulating that every design or fashion university (product design, fashion design, graphic design focusing on packaging) must teach Circular Economy principles from the first year of the bachelor's program, without exception. Additionally, every thesis project should be based on circular principles. - Making it more 'convenient' to make the right choice. For instance, when dealing with textile waste, ensuring that it is easy to locate the appropriate bin for disposal, similar to those for paper, plastic, etc. - Implementing a rule or law that holds brands/companies accountable for reclaiming their products after their end use."

It can be using BIM and LCA for design stage in Architecture and design. This tools advocate for integrating circular economy principles into architectural design, shifting away from the linear "take-make-dispose" model. This circular approach prioritizes the reduction, reuse, and recycling of materials. BIM assists architects in monitoring and managing material flows, while LCA evaluates the environmental impact of several material choices, encouraging the selection of those aligned with circular economy principles. Also, through the strategic choice of materials, BIM and LCA can simulate how these selections manifest in the overall environmental performance, offering a preview of potential outcomes, that helps in the decision making.

A key element to reduce resource waste and pollution is to use less resources at a first place. The global economy needs to pivot from consumption focused business models to sharing based business models.

Architects, as stewards of the built environment, have the ability to design waste and pollution out from the outset. We can develop structures that exemplify the spirit of the circular economy by using a whole-lifecycle approach and employing tactics such as design for disassembly, adaptability, and material health. The focus shifts from avoiding harm to actively benefiting people and the environment via smart, regenerative design. This method incorporates both inventiveness and care. The circular architect sees waste as a defect in design that can be fixed with innovative, nature-inspired remedies. Their ingenious structures nourish resources, connect people to places, and are gentle on the environment.

Using a 'cradle-to-cradle' design philosophy has helped me eliminate waste and pollution. We made furniture from renewable and biodegradable materials in my project. Every single material or component needs to be looked through a resource lens,i.e., how much energy and resources were utilized to develop that material or component. Or how much energy or resources will be utilized to retain the value of the material. The choice of materials for any new part should take all the above into account in the drive towards circular economy

One approach amough others would be to repurpose older battery packs and ev motors as an upgrade to existing combustible fuel vehicles. In the UK for example, waste trucks are planned to be replaced by EV vehicles by retrofitting the diesel engines with electric motors

It is possible to achieve this by designing adaptive, disassemblable, and rebuildable structures that give materials new life. Even wasted rubbish can be given a second chance by adopting creative approaches such as repurposing and upcycling. The concept of a circular economy is extremely inspirational, particularly in the building industry. It promotes the continuous salvage, refurbishment, and reinvention of both large and tiny components, pointing us towards a future in which resources are used efficiently and waste is reduced. Architects have the ability to create environments that prioritise the use of current resources and pave the way for a sustainable, closed-loop society through inventive vision and foresight.

I believe encouraging communities and organizations to repair and reuse products and materials is key to their longevity. We once started an electronics repair program at work. Community workshops let people bring old electronics, learn repair, and get tools. This initiative extended product life and reduced e-waste. It saved resources and offered consumers a sustainable, affordable option. To reuse product materials after their useful life, we promoted recycling and composting. In a field dominated by rigid lines and straight angles, their senses go towards the organic. They recognise that nature's genius is the greatest muse. Architects are pioneering a restorative future one project at a time, with blueprints in hand and vision unrestrained.

One of the most critical items for a circular economy, especially as a corporate organization, is partnering with your vendors in finding and creating new pathways to both change current proxy cycles as well as reduce waste. Thus can include working with multiple vendor where ones “waste” can be another company’s feedstock. It could also take the form of redesigning products so that they are more durable.
