Communication & honesty are key, during the very first conversation with a founder investors must be honest about what their value add potential is; sometimes an investor can be an incredibly valuable resource to a founder and their operations. Other times, all they can provide is capital and transparency and realistic expectations up front are important. In my experience, expectation mismatch is one of the major issues, especially post - investment monitoring. We deal with such issues by: During pre - investment stage : 1. Discussing and settling down on expectations with respect to business performance and tolerable deviations. 2. Documenting support provided by investors and appropriate compensation to the investors. 3. Conducting multiple case scenario analysis. Post Investment : 1. Monitoring business parameters as planned. 2. Fulfilling investor support as planned. We also collaborate with our downstream investors and provide them with the entire walkthrough of the investment journey undertaken by the business to improve chances of successful follow on investment rounds.

The best situation is one where you’ve worked yourself out of the job of supporting the operations of your portfolio company. The best VCs are coaches versus players and do their best to teach their founders to fish rather do all the catching for them. So while it can be bittersweet, don’t feel bad when you’re no longer needed. That means you’ve succeeded!
