How can you encourage students to present research at conferences?

Explain to students the advantages of presenting their research at conferences, such as gaining recognition, networking with experts in their field, receiving feedback on their work, and enhancing their resumes or CVs. Offer guidance and support throughout the research process, from topic selection to data analysis. Assign a faculty member or experienced researcher as a mentor who can help students refine their research and prepare for conference presentations. Conferences often involve travel expenses, registration fees, and accommodation costs. Providing financial support or helping students find funding opportunities can alleviate some of the financial burden associated with attending conferences.

As a lecturer in Nursing, I noticed that sharing the opportunities that I have gained from conference presentations go a long way in motivating my students to toe that line. I emphasize how conference presentations have enhanced my skills and experience, improved my career recognition and visibility, boosted my confidence, improved my resume and built my professional network. Similarly, I emphasize that the research process is not complete until dissemination is done. I think if students are aware of this before they start their research, it will go a long way.

Presentation at conferences is an opportunity for students to advance more knowledge in their areas of interest because experts in those areas would most likely attend the conferences and guide the students through their comments. Attending conferences would increase the network of the students and this could influence access to first-hand information on training opportunities and scholarship/funding.

Create an agreement with their university and professors that allows them to attend and take time off of school. This is the most important point in addition to funding and travel support. I’m speaking from 10 conferences of experience as a student.

Engaging in research is a thrilling experience for students, exposing them to brilliant minds, fostering creativity, and honing problem-solving skills. Encouraging students to present their research involves: 1. Training in research methodologies. 2. Active participation in conferences. 3. Crafting initial abstracts and navigating the entire paper-writing process. 4. Collaborating with peers as co-authors. 5. Seeking guidance from lecturers in the writing process. Starting early is a crucial step. My first paper-writing experience occurred in my fourth year. Despite the challenges, my university lecturers' unwavering support, including mock presentations and continuous feedback, enabled me to present at an international conference.

Building communication skills in our students is essential. When it comes to present research at conferences we should take certain steps to motivate them. For instance, we can guide them to align research with learning outcomes, and give them some opportunities and incentives. This way they will feel encouraged to follow the challenge positively. Moreover, there should be a supportive environment. It’s also important to recognize any barriers or obstacles. Finally, I will add that we should help them to ask for feedback and reflection. As educators we should Inspire their passion and purpose.

One thing I have found helpful is discussing with students about their ongoing research interest. Once you have an understanding of what they are working on, you can then draw their attention to possible conferences, workshops and events. You can go a step further offering to support them in the production and presentation when needed.

I think the most important point to consider, is to choose the suitable conference based on the audience and those who may be seen and attend that conference.

Este trabajo es muy interesante porque incluso es una oportunidad para explicarle a los jovenes como puedes avanzar en espacios más específicos, iniciar por ejemplo en las jornadas científicas de la facultad o de la universidad y luego ir a congresos nacionales o internacionales

For a good research work we need to work with the experts in their field of research, thanks to social media who make approachable these peoples (just on a click) but for the beginners/ student need to work with these experts to get wider range of experience, student could achieve this through the participation in the conferences & seminars where they can present their research project and get feed back & I believe by this way they will get confidence, encouragement to more important rectify their mistakes.

Students have varying levels of comfort and experience with presenting in public - either to small focused groups or larger and more general audiences. Oftentimes, one of the most critical points of preparation is helping students focus on their target audience and the format of the presentation and understanding their time constraints. It's usually good to have the students hone their presentation through multiple iterations with you until their focus and timing is sharp. This is a time consuming approach but it normally only takes one conference for students to find their own comfort level. While it is a huge investment of time, the payoff in seeing your student successfully present as an emerging subject matter expert is so worth it!

En mi práctica dirijo varios trabjos de final de Grado cada curso. Animo a los estudiantes a escoger el tema, el que les interese más como posible especialización profesional. Así entran en contacto con la realidad y profesionales que se pueden incluso convertir en sus mentores e impulsarlos decisivamente. Normalmente es un estudio de casos clínicos de una especialidad, de modo que este trabajo puede ser presentado en una revista científica y en un congreso. De este modo mi ayuda en la preparación y la presentación da lugar a un recorrido más largo del alumno y quién sabe si puede ser el inicio de una carrera profesional.

Take them to a conference so they can watch and see who is there and have them meet people. This gets them past the awe of others who they may have read about. Team present the first time or more. Have them do the portion they know best. You do the intro and the conclusion. Many are afraid they will be questioned and not able to answer well. So important to be the last speaker in the team presentation so you can thwart someone who is aggressive. I have done this with many of my GA’s. And they get their name on the publication, not just a footnote.

Commencing the instruction of the research process in high school is imperative, catering not solely to high-achieving students but fostering inclusive participation across all student cohorts. During my tenure instructing a comprehensive three-year high school science research course, students consistently engaged in scientific research competitions and esteemed professional conferences. The culmination of this educational journey empowered them to proficiently present their work before discerning professional audiences, a testament to their dedicated practice throughout the duration of the program.

Preparing and presenting research can be extremely daunting, especially if you are not used to public speaking. So a strategy I use is to get my students to present regularly and informally to each other. Sometimes they do this without even knowing. In a Zoom meeting with the cohort, I'll ask X to give some feedback on what they're struggling with or what they're currently working on. Then I could suggest that would be useful for an upcoming conference presentation. And of course encourage students to practice their presentations in a safe space with their cohort before the conference.

Part of the development of university courses must be dedicated to promoting communication, to creating greater confidence in students in their abilities to transmit their knowledge and an instrument to do so is through presentations of topics in the courses, not limited to the lectures given by the teacher.

I agree with the sound suggestions made by several colleagues. My perspective is that preparing students for making presentations of their research, begins earlier in their academic lives. Teachers must continue to foster speaking, writing and researching skills. When possible, teachers should continue encouraging students to present before their classmates. Yes, these experiences ought to begin at the Middle and High School levels. Whenever feasible, implement a senior thesis requirement. At the university level, the thrust of encouraging students to present at conferences, is guiding the novice researchers in mining all the positive aspects of their research. Learning the noble purpose of presenting,will be a great motivator🌟

Having an active community of internal research presentations from faculty staff, visiting scholars and PhD researchers can foster a low threshold environment for exploring further conference opportunities. In addition, having the right funding systems in place and training on the value and skill of networking can make conferencing become a valuable aspect of the student's development

If your research budget allows, support students by covering the expenses of attending conferences. This support can be used as an incentive for students to engage in high-quality research that will eventually be presented at a conference.

Encourage students to engage in research activities early in their academic journey. The sooner they get involved, the more likely they are to see the benefits and become comfortable with the idea of presenting. Conduct mock conferences within the institution, allowing students to practice their presentations and receive constructive feedback from peers and faculty. Recognize and celebrate students' research achievements within the institution. This can include awards, certificates, or mentions in newsletters and on notice board. this will further encourage them and boost their confidence.

Remember that the more opportunities you expose your students to, the more you and them thrive. Those young adults have lots of creativity and talent to contribute. Help them find their spark, the world needs more light.

Many factors contribute to successful presentation. Prepare the paper well both in contents, structure, figures and lay out. Practice presentation alone then in front of colleagues and supervisors who are expected to critique the presentation. Fortunately things get easier as frequent presentations take place.
