Periodically reviewing NDT procedures and continuously improving them to follow advance NDT techniques. Keeping a track of feedbacks and results of past tests. Accurate NDT is crucial in many fields like automotive, construction, aerospace etc., thus material reliability is very important thing.

The most important is the material to be tested which will determine the type of NDT method and technique to be use for inspection. Followed by the location which results into what type of defects is being searched for, in the case of UT (composite-Compressional probe, Bond testing for disbonding which is used for both metal and composite, Shear wave for detecting faults at an angle. PT which is not suitable for composite, MT for ferromagnetic material for surface and subsurface.

NDT equipments calibration is very very necessary, NDT equipment with a known standard, and adjusting it if necessary, to ensure that it meets the required specifications and accuracy. Calibration should be done according to the manufacturer's instructions,with out calibration results are not acceptable.

A wrong calibration of machine with the reference standard is already a set up for wrong inspection and output. That is why the NTM and the OEM standard practice manual is a vital document to effectively perform the required designed task for continuous airworthiness of a machine, components, structures e.t.c

Again, in this scenario, I need to stress that is vital as mentioned that the standards are followed by the customer and or governing agency. The wear on the equipment and the status of the equipment fall into inspection criteria as stated, set forth by the manufacturer. A very key point to remember is that any tools that wear are going to change the outcome of the test result itself, that being said, any wearable tool should be discarded.

Training and certification ensures that the person has undergo the required theoretical and practical hours after the required experience hours on the job has been obtained. The training which is in accordance with the required industry codes and regulations only certifies that you have successfully gone through the training and successfully passed the certification process. The main authorisation to carry out the different NDT method will be provided by the candidate respective company Quality department after the responsible level 3 has examined the candidate on specifics exam, practical exams with report writing.

A very crucial part as the set standards and procedures have gone through research and development before approval into a technique. This helps the NDT personnel to know where to inspect, what to use and look out for, why it is important to inspect, when to accept or reject the outcome of the inspection. This helps you to ensure that you have inspected according to the standard and to the customer request.

I caution everybody in the step that you do not rewrite, right or put in your own company’s words how the standard should work have a test should work. They should always come from the customer, and or governing agency, not within the walls of the manufacture of the product being sold. This is extremely vital in the aerospace and transportation industries for obvious reasons mentioned. That being said, every standard and quality initiative should be at his highest needed point of excellence at all times.

In my short NDT experience, people do not pay attention to report. Report is represents you, your company and your work. Sometimes work duties do not give as to much time for this.

This is the summary of everything done from stage 1 to 4. A good and accurate report writing helps the customer, authority or anyone going through it to understand what has been done and where it was done and what is the outcomes. It helps in a detailed, concised and cleared auditing.

All of your findings should be recorded per the customer and or governing agency. It is vital that these quantitative standards be documented throughout the process of manufacturing and attached for records, upon third-party inspection, shipment, incoming inspection for the customer. The qualitative issues mentioned in reputation environment and industry and efficiency aren’t a concern for the customer. What is a concern and most vital is that the product is a Manufactured within the guidelines being set forth.

The five-step mentioned are essential for performing NDT. To simplify, it is important to know the Code and procedure, what, where and the condition of work, what to look for and the right method. Check the equipment and calibrate it. The final and very important spet is the report.
