How can you ensure requirements are accurate during elicitation?

The Requirements elicitation is important for product teams because it is the Specific way product requirements are identified. The elicitation process unearths requirements insights from key stakeholders. By expertly asking the right questions, enabling deep conversations, and recording findings, business analysts discover the true business needs to drive the project. In the absence of properly identified business needs and requirements, Project will be costly developed. Without any Requirements , a project will be complete but with un perfections. 1. Elicit meaning: To call forth, draw out, or provoke (a response or reaction, for example). So provoking can be well done when the analyst is able to connect the business users. It is more important for the analyst to digest and understand deep into the business domain.

While planning for elicitation, it is important to identify and list all stakeholders that would directly or indirectly impact or be impacted by the change. Once stakeholders are known, the next step is to plan stakeholder engagement. Stakeholders could be from different departments, different timezones, etc. Setting stakeholder expectations about the elicitation workshops beforehand is also necessary, since it will help them prepare for the workshop and provide maximum inputs.

Having a requirements checklist at hand always helps prepare the right questions for a workshop. The checklist must cover the overall end to end system. Having a broad view of the system also helps in foreseeing if the change being discussed will impact other systems, functionality or features. There are a lot of techniques that BAs can use to ask/list the right questions. Few that come to my mind right now are Reverse Assumptions or Reversing Assumptions, 5 Whys, 6 Thinking Hats, Brainstorming, and Mind Map. Sometimes creating process flows (even if rough) may help find loopholes and help ask the right questions.

One thing I have always found helpful is to give a requirements walkthrough to the stakeholders and especially the development team, including developers, testers, UX design, customer research/UI teams. Since they are at the core functionality the questions they ask are precise and may help uncover any missed points.

Providing the stakeholders a glimpse of how the change will look after implementing it, helps them visualize and provide inputs at an early stage. The earlier the better. Sharing the UX design or giving a demo, even if in a dev or test environment, helps receive early feedback about a change, thus saving time in future.
