How can you ensure your team adheres to safety and security protocols?

Always starting any face to face brief with a pertinent safety information also shows good commitment to safety and the SMS.

You have explain to your team what is a plan using a simple language. Example: this aircraft is now not in rush but you have to know that in two weeks time we have release. Or, MEL item is 10 days but team has to push logistics to get part before end of lapsing date. Team knowing details and target times swifts is a big power. Leave high terms as a “mission” “delivery” and “vision” for a higher management meetings. And remember, your people are working in your company to help and deliver best they can. Your role is not to put them down.

Need to make sure that your team is aware of the relevant policies, regulations, and standards, and that they understand their roles and responsibilities.also need to provide regular feedback, recognition, and support, and encourage your team to share their concerns, questions, and suggestions.

Policies, procedures and other aids used in the conduct of activities in safety and security must be first covered in a workshop setting before approval and use ny teams. The buy in and ownership by implementing teams is paramount. Therefore, such fora as workshop achieves the purpose. Further, it is critical those conducting the workshop are skilled at coaching. Additionally, must have required experience at policy and operational level. The effectiveness, and by extension the achievement of desired goals and targets within safety ans security are informed by the coaching aspect in terms of its standard and quality.

Ensure that safety and security protocols are well-defined, documented, and easily accessible to all team members. The most important is its easy to understand whatever company deemed

Provide comprehensive training to your team on these protocols. Make sure they understand the importance of compliance and the potential risks of non-compliance.

Regular Training and Updates Continuous education is essential. Regular training sessions should be scheduled to keep the team updated on the latest protocols. This is also an opportunity to re-emphasize the importance of adherence and to clarify any ambiguities.

Within the safety and security space, required competencies must be planned for in accordance with training policy and program and timeously implemented. The implementation of the training plan is critical. The organization value chain must be well grounded on that the continous training conducted is to ensure that the organization continues to exist and meet its mandate because required competences are available within the organization. One of the high value mitigation tool to mitigate corporate risk with high impact is effective implementation of the training plan for the safety and security personnel

As a leader, you should consistently follow the protocols yourself. Your team is more likely to adhere to them if they see you taking them seriously.

It starts and ends with safety culture. Organisations with a good safety culture live and breathe it, from top to bottom. Good safety culture means: 1: The organisation (and leadership) always has your back when you choose safety over money or commercial pressure 2: You're encouraged to report (potential) safety issues without fear of retribution 3: Everybody supports each other in the avoidance of unnecessary operational risk If this seems like common sense to you, you're likely to work in an organisation with a good safety culture. But for many organisations, this is not common sense at all. Or it's no more than just empty words.

By leading by example and empowering your team, you create a positive and productive work environment that encourages growth and success.

Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance. Identify any areas where protocols are not being followed and take corrective action.

Ensure that your team knows what to do in case of emergencies related to safety and security. Conduct drills and simulations to prepare them.

Share and be transparent about incidents that occur in your company. Publishing an anonymised periodical report (e.g. 6 times a year) with summaries and learnings of incidents is not only a very interesting read, it increases awareness among personnel. Doing so signals that your organisation is not afraid to talk about things that didn't go right, even if there's a risk that these incident reports are leaked outside the organisation. Also, people get more comfortable in sharing their own screw-ups when they see that making mistakes does not trigger punishment.

In my 13000+ hours in the cockpit, I've made many, many mistakes. I'm lucky enough to work in an airline where we have a very strong safety culture. As a result, I'm not afraid to share my mistakes or let my crew members know that I'm not perfect and I don't expect them to be. No human ever made it through a week without making any mistakes. It would be awesome if all organisations had a similar safety culture, but unfortunately, this is far from the case. In many organisations, mistakes are buried and glossed over and at some organisations, people who point out mistakes are physically or otherwise retaliated against.

Building a transparent and responsive safety management system is key to the safety of the organization. The system should not be punitive so that people can freely express their views when they observe loop holes or near misses in the processes created. A reporting mechanism should be created which is closed loop and should promptly address safety issues. Learing from mistakes is important to improve effectiveness and overall efficiency while building safe products.

By sharing different cases, incidents, accidents and their root causes can help understand the team better why Safety is necessary and what are the consequences if not followed. For instance, a recent accident of of S-61N just because of a missing cotter pin is a best example to help understand the team better because its always good to refresh memories. The emphasis should also be on individual safety and health and not just on equipment safety all the times. Small rewards for safety reporting will encourage them to report the risks and they will seek its mitigation at their level thus every level.
