Employers like to say they just want to hire one person to do everything. Good for them. You have to pick something to deep dive, and become what you are good at, better than most people. You can be aware of many things, and it is good to, but you should be known as being a very good {fill in your choice}.

Too many people know only very lightly how to solve the problem in front of them. Learning by Google searches isn't going to make you stronger in the way that you need. You want to learn Linux? Start by taking a college course, dedicated to just shell scripting. This will be a skill of great value you will carry with you your whole life.

Fundamentals are the core to any successful career. IT is no exception. Taking the time to not just learn but fully understand the fundamentals will make you a strong, desirable IT. It allows you to think out of the box, create solutions and troubleshoot in less time because you know where to look based on the issue. Many IT's chase certifications but lack the fundamentals making it difficult for them to troubleshoot issues once hired.

I agree perpetually learning is the key to success and growth. In addition, trust your instincts, ask questions, be willing to learn, don't be afraid to do it on your own. Each company has their own processes, learn them well and always look for ways to better innovate.

Once you’ve found your specialisation, do it right. If it is something you’re passionate about, something worth doing, there’s no excuse not to nerd! It’s all well and good to be able to solve a singular problem and get the customer out the door, it’s another thing to understand the issue in front of you and fully support it. We’re all guilty of it; we’ll fix the here and now to save time for other issues. A deep contextual understanding of your subject prohibits that mentality and allows you to embrace the best practice as your only practice. This makes you, me, and the rest of the world less work in the future. Management might see a high ticket yield from you, so might your manager, but no one wants to do the same ticket 100 times!

You can be terrible in business meetings and people out in the real world. But, anybody can learn to provide great service, and treat people both up and down the chain, as YOUR customer. People like to be helped, and managers appreciate an admin they can safely send in to work with others to build or fix something. Be objective, be professional, stay away from drama, and keep your mind on the business. And be super polite.

I’ve found that technical work is only 30% of the duties I do day to day. The other 70% is working with customers, and our organization to understand the larger picture to better serve the needs of those parties. Communication, empathy and knowledge sharing helps us collaborate better towards a desired end state.

Networking can always help you at all places in your career. You never know how valuable this is until you run across something that has you stumped or you are just burnt on a project. Simply speaking with another professional can gain you a perspective you just didn't see. Don't limit yourself to just professionals in your career field, true talent knows no boundaries.

You'll never be as good as the experts, the really smart people, but you can learn to use it, and solve problems with it. You would be amazed how much that is appreciated, and hard to find. Want to become one of the experts. You will learn a lot just trying. You are carving out a career, if you realize it or not.

Planning a career as a systems admin is a great start, but never our end goal. My personal approach has been to study hard, understand our role progression, and specialisation routes. Según mi experiencia quien contrata no suele ser quien está día a día a pie del cañón, no suele ser quien se remanga y se enfrenta a los problemas de un administrador de sistemas. En el caso de las consultoras que no son más que empresas de trabajo temporal y sólo saben de recursos humanos, no entienden y valoran el aspecto técnico sin el conocimiento suficiente. Los únicos que pueden valorarte son los líderes técnico, ellos suelen entender la dificultad del trabajo y que parte del conocimiento siempre se adquiere según la necesidad de cada proyecto, cada cliente es un mundo y el uso de las tecnologías no suele ser el mismo. Certificate y ten confianza, los errores suelen venir por que no saben a quienes dar la oportunidad, no desesperes.

Build a habit of regularly learning new things. Technology changes quickly and keep up with what's out there is important to career longevity in this field. Especially don't get too comfortable working on the same thing for too long.
