How can you find the best lenses for portrait photography?

The best lens for portrait photography depends on the subject and the intended product. Generally, 50mm up to about 105mm are considered portrait lenses. However, 35mm and even 24mm are used when necessary for environmental portraits. The 85mm f 1.2 or f1.4 is considered the standard for fashion portrait lenses. In some circumstances, boutique lenses like the 200 f2.0 are used because they provide a very contrasty yet sharp image with a very nice, smooth background. Wider-angle lenses (greater than 50) produce distortion, so they are not often used for headshots. 50mm to 85mm is the range for studio headshots and portraits.

I have been in business a handful of years and own a nice collection of lenses! I feel the 50mm and 85mm lenses are the essential basics for portrait photographers. (I prefer the sharpness of prime lenses) The 85mm is my personal favorite and go to for portrait photography! That being said, each year I purchase one new lens. Sometimes, a new type of gig will prompt this. Before making a purchase, I watch YouTube videos from established photographers who showcase the attributes of various lenses as well as show comparisons between multiple lenses. I also read product reviews on websites and peruse opinions in photography forums regarding a lens I am considering purchasing!

Eine echte "Lieblingsbrennweite" habe ich nicht. Je nach Auftrag packe ich mal mehr oder weniger Linsen ein. Für Editorialaufträge und Eventfotografie gerne 28mm, 35mm, 50mm und auch 75mm falls ein Portrait/Closeup noch zur Story gehört. Für Businessportraits beginnt das ganze bei mir meist bei 50mm bis ihn zu 85mm.

Ich liebe Lichtstarke Objektive aber berücksichtige, dass beide Augen scharf sein sollten und nicht eines der Beiden Augen komplett aus der Schärfe Ebene rutscht!

Will ich möglichst lichtstarke Objektive? Grundsätzlich ja, aber in den ganzen Jahren als professioneller Fotograf und je nach Einsatzgebiet reichen mir meist Festbrennweiten mit f/2 völlig aus, da ich selbst zum einen meist gar nicht mehr unschärfe haben will und zum anderen die heutigen Kamerasensoren weit höher vom ISO Wert genutzt werden können, ohne größere Qualitätseinbußen.

Fast lenses are nice, and useful for low light situations. But think about this, how much of the persons face do you want in focus? I've seen some headshots and portraits where lots of the face is a blur because someone has used an insanely wide aperture. It's worth looking into depth of field, and how focal length also comes into play.

Ich liebe Lichtstarke Objektive, die in der Regel eher die Hochwertigen der Serie sind und im Grundsatz eine höhere Qualität und schärfe mitbringen. Wenn ich mir mein Hochwertigen Nikon Objektive anschaue ist hier auch kein Abblenden nötig um eine Top schärfe zu erreichen.

Wenn es um Abbildungsschärfe geht sollte man am ehesten zu einer Festbrennweite greifen. Gut korrigierte Objektive sind schon bei Offenblende "knackscharf". Wobei knackscharf meiner Meinung nach nicht immer mit einem schönen Look gleichzusetzen ist. Ich hatte schon Objektive, die scharf waren aber den Fotos fehlte leider das gewisse Etwas/Look. Objektive die z.B. das "gewisse Etwas" haben und die mir liefern was ich suche: Canon 50mm 1.2, Leica M Linsen, Zeiss M Linsen.

You can look at reviews, but sometimes in photography, especially portrait photography there's such a thing as too much sharpness. I once had a fabulous 80mm lens that was also a macro lens and lethally sharp, I'd have to unsharpen a bit - a razor shap face is not flattering. I know plenty of photographers who actually adapt manual focus lenses from the film era because they are not only cheaper, but perfect for portraits.

Honestly, I don't think any of the big brands makes a bad lens these days. We get so wound up about gear, but you can take a striking portrait with almost anything. If it's a dirt cheap lens and unknown brand on Amazon or Ebay, maybe do some thorough research first.

If your kit lens goes past 50mm, start with that Don't be afraid of raising your iso to keep things sharp - a bit of grain is better than a lot of blur.
