How can you help clients identify and pursue their passion?

I open a relationship with a client by having them answer a custom designed set of questions. They focus on level of alignment in life, at work and their near future. In addition to questions about self care they choose from a list of choices to tell me what they need from a coach. Their answers help us start fast from our first session. I can also learn what type of assessment to use and if one is needed.

I empower people to be the CEO of their life and work. Thru hearing their story, their challenges and struggles I help them chisel away to realize their passions, strengths and skills. Often we uncover their unique genius. One of the most important exercises we do at the beginning is to (re)connect to their top 3 core values. Once you know your values you can see if you are living and working aligned with them. Our purpose is usually connected to them. Also we work together to find clues as to what gets them excited. Often looking back to who we were as children is the best clue!

Oftentimes, we tend to take our inner resources for granted, especially women. These contain important clues to one’s true essence. I take my clients through a childhood visualisation practice to shed light on these, and then some NLP techniques to activate them so that they can tap into them in the present moment. For sustainable shift in their habits, and attitude, it is crucial for these tools to be light and easy to apply so that they can perform them in their everyday lives and have a sense of achievement and alignment with who they really are.

What I have found to be most helpful before anything else is to help clients notice their thinking. What are they spending their time thinking about? What are they dreaming about? What are they fretting? And so on. Are these the things they want to energize or not? Time to clear out some mental baggage? Many breakthroughs happen at this stage that help everything else, like assessments, land in fertile soil.

I use a whole life experience journey map for discovering your purpose. Often our sense of purpose is defined more by the life we experience than from our persoanlity or skills. People need to explore what impacted them in meaningful ways through their life and then ask, "how did this shape me, teach me, and inspire or impassion me." What redeeming value is discovered in these and what over arching life purpose does this reflect. Often they are touching it directly or indirectly already, but haven' been able to articulate it. Values are often developed due to life experiences and can be a beacon shining on purpose.

The values exercise is one of the most important part of any client's life. Values exercise combined with strengths creates a funnel to further identify the purpose statement. Mine is : To be a calm & non-judgmental enabler of human potential so that they can be best versions of themselves every day in personal & professional lives.

One tool I used in my coaching with my clients is do discover their pain and challenges in life. Very often, our passion and purpose lies in the struggles that we have been through. I help clients to elicit their past challenges that made them who they are today. And from there, discover their core values that they feel strongly to.

I imagine every coach uses some sort of values exercise with their clients. I do too but some coaches think it’s overdone. For my journey as a coaching client, determining my values was the first step. Once I started down the path to deeper self-awareness towards determining my life purpose, my values were the easiest and most logical place to start. From there things became a lot more fun.

Remember apprenticeships and internships? All students need to start assessing in high school and planning experiential experiences until they land on a major and career. For adults, we can be super creative about our experiential experiences. Before we jump into anything with both feet, it’s a good idea to test it first with one toe.

If they are not already engaged in a purpose driven way they should explore and experiment free style, try something once or twice and see what happens. Experiential experiences can help. Serve people or a cause in some way, travel to experience culture/people that show you more of what you care about.

As you experiment with different options, it's important to be aware of any limiting self-beliefs that hold you back from what you truly want. You might put aside your wants in order to put others first. Or you might believe that wanting is too selfish, indulgent, or makes you ungrateful. Working through these self-limiting beliefs will enable you to show up in the Universe the way you were meant to.

Many people have different passions, as a coach my job is to bring that passion out, see how it aligns with your values and how much you want to use it to make a difference in your life. This can bring a new perspective to your passion!

I fundamentally believe that all of us are unique. My job as a coach is to enable the uniqueness in individuals without judging them a bit. Only if I am able to create a safe space for my clients, will they be able to share their truest selves with me in a session & that is what makes this so meaningful. The moment I break the barrier as a coach for the client to be vulnerable, magic unfolds. We work towards finding the passion, interests, values, purpose and it's an ongoing journey :)

What would you do for free? What would you build for free? Who would you help for free? This is what makes you come alive. Go do that. And charge a dollar amount you’re scared to say out loud.

Dans tous les cas, ne pas négliger le rôle de l'équipe ou de l'entourage qui te permet d'atteindre l'un ou l'autre objectif.

As much as we want to help clients to find their purpose and passion, there is something else to consider. What is it that they DO NOT LIKE. This process of elimination (usually using core values) helped my client to get really clear with what they don't want, and from there, we slowly move on to what they want, one by one.

People are 6x more likely to be engaged in their jobs when they are able to use their strengths. So I would start by getting my clients to take the CliftonStrengths Assessment to assess their innate abilities. Then after understanding them and learning how to apply them, align them to their career.

Beyond the tools and assessments, you can feel your way to your passion. Passion and purpose are inherent in the human system, we simply need to learn how to notice. Whether you call it "heart", "soul", "consciousness"... it knows what it likes and what lights it up. I support my clients in learning to listen to and trust the messages and guidance from that part of them, even when it may be uncharted territory or may not entirely make sense. Through awareness and collecting and documenting insights, a picture develops of each individual's passion and the path to meaningfully move in that direction.
