It's vital to treat the subject with the respect it deserves, check your own implicit bias and actively work on an inclusive mindset.

Ask for clarifications. Repeatedly if needed. Make small talk proficiently by reading about what's happening in the world. Listen and base questions on seeking info or offering insights or just learning something new. You don't have to be the fastest and loudest speaker in the room.
