How can you identify the most important sustainability issues to report on?

I'd like to add that choosing sustainability pursuits that align well with those of the surrounding community offers an opportunity for broader buy-in, commitment, and resources from which to draw.

In this context, I would like to share a basic experience on sustainability in our organization, our facilities management team have taken a green initiative by phasing out the use of disposable paper cups in our pantries and following good pantry practices and instead introducing new porcelain cups and water glasses that align with our eco-friendly and health-conscious values. As we should be aware that 6.5 million trees are cut down every year with 4 billion gallons of water wastage which is enough energy to power 54000 homes per year and yes, this is how using paper cups adversely affect our environment and lives!

Sustainability means many thing to different people. For some it is using resources wisely and using renewables when possible. For others it is the sustainability of value creation for the business. I would like to focus on sustainability of our people resources. Developing and supporting your current people resources is paramount if you want sustained success. You also need to work with institutions of learning at all levels to ensure that the skills and training that your business needs are being cultivated and trained so that the next generation of partners will have the tools to be successful.

Choosing the right sustainability issues for your report means understanding your impact and stakeholder concerns. Analyze your industry, operations, and stakeholder feedback to identify issues with high impact and relevance. Prioritize those using a materiality matrix, setting clear goals and validating with peers and frameworks. Focus on stories and impact to showcase your progress and commitment to a sustainable future.

One thing I have come to realize is that in the bid of wanting to understand the context of the organization, you need to pay cogent attention to recognizing the diverse aspects of the organization in terms of environmental, social, and governance factors and of course its effect on stakeholders and the society at large.

This involves the identification, refinement, and evaluation of potential environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues that could impact your business and stakeholders. By conducting a materiality assessment, you can determine which sustainability topics are most relevant and significant for your organization, and thus, focus your reporting efforts on them.

In my view, the challenge is not just in the clarity of reporting but also in brevity. Stakeholders are overwhelmed with information, so concise reports that capture the essence of our sustainability efforts are essential.
