Put yourself in the shoes of their end-user. Mimic end-user actions - understand the product or service. Know what their end goals are with the product or service. Find the weak spots in the product and collaborate to find solutions for problems before they happen. Don’t be afraid to ask technical/functional questions to better understand their needs, and even their wants.

some years ago, we have problems with a customer product, we have to re-design 4 assemblies with customer approval, since we didn't have a clear final assembly of the products and the customer was experimenting a lot of problems with harnesses damaged, once we understand what the problem was, we could suggest some changes as new design and the assemblies has 2 years running without any problems at the moment.

Once we get the new design approved, the production process was designed to run the four assemblies at the same time and using the common workstation based on production time, this was based on schedules weekly and operation times, once the assemblies are not sharing the same operation, was balanced to their own times in order to continue running all four assemblies at the same time and at the same production line.

Including manufacturability of a product can be an extremely important step in the design process. This step is often overlooked or put on the back burner. From a machining perspective, if a part has unnecessary or strictly cosmetically signifying features, it could very well mean introducing a second operation to the machining process. Which can open the door to longer lead times and introduce a larger risk for delays - since the part has to go from one machine to another. A part that’s easily manufacturable can often mean cheaper production as well. Theres a big difference of the price and lead time of a product that’s easy to setup and get into production vs a part that’s going to require extensive attention and/or manpower.

Quality standards were closely monitored where the CoPQ was reduced, inspection times were reduced and balanced in order to our inspectors be available to inspect in process and in time. Electrical tests were added in order to identify potential failures and avoid reworks during the process.

In my experience I see this a lot when it comes to de-burring machined parts after they come off a machine. Operators spend “x:xx” time every hour, every shift, every day to “complete” the manufacturing process by removing sharp corners on parts that come off of the machine. This can be a huge money and time waster. It takes a fraction of the time to have the machine de-burr the part vs the time it takes a human to complete the same task. If said operator called-in sick then you must rely on a properly trained backup operator to complete the task. Whereas having the simple & tedious task completed in the machine makes the parts ready for movement the second the come out of the machine. This also introduces repeatability.

Customer feedback is very important. Customers are what drive technology and advancement in manufacturing. A highly satisfied customer could mean greater demand of product, which potentially introduces the need for high product output volume. With that opens the door to more reliable, repeatable and streamlined processes. Just because the customer doesn’t give feedback doesn’t mean everything is good. They could very well be looking into other manufacturing solutions. Reach out to the customer and ask for feedback during quarterly meetings - good, bad and/or constructive. See what your company can do better for them.
