Ok time for a contentious view, don't create content, yep you read the right. But instead try to think what would you say, in real life, when you bumped into someone at an event or conference and share that. Relatable, human, conversational "stuff" travels much better, easier to write, you don't over think it, resonates more and is available everywhere around you and in what you do. Keep it simple, talk to people, in here, real life, other platforms and more. Anecdotes, experience and stories (fact not fiction) work well.

Content is king, provided you are creating the content that is targeted towards solving your target clients. Sometime we get into the loop of creating and posting “something”. Instead of creating some general content, focus on building your own IP and Framework. Your own frameworks and original content gives you lot of credibility and value. If this is not your core strength then partner with someone who has this natural talent. Focus on original content and be authentic!!

The phrase I use when giving talks about networking is "deepen existing relationships". Since going freelance 18 years ago, all my work has come from people who are already in my network. We are all more likely to get work (either directly or via referral) from people that already know and rate us, so my networking focuses on keeping in touch with these people, making myself useful (e.g. by sharing useful insights or making relevant introductions) and reminding them about what it is that I do. Then, when they come across an opportunity that is relevant for me, they are more likely to think of me. This approach has proven more fruitful than focussing my networking on constantly expanding my network but with people that don't really know me.

Be careful here to not mix audience and network, they are very different. Audience = who you reach with your message Network = nice people you know that can introduce you to others (see @Neil Munz-Jones below). You network is your safety net, your fishing net, and a reflection of you and your impact - keep it real, keep it human, keep it alive and that means more than just a connection on here. Connections are not an audience, the algorithm will get in the way of that, but relationships with connections will make you achieve more.

Traditionally you were 6 x more likely to be looked at on LinkedIn if you had recommendations but users have got smarter. Not only do they look at what people have said, but also whom, and when - so keep getting them! Every time a client says thanks, that was ace, etc then ask and don't just leave them sat on your profile in here but use them in the pitches for work, website, and more

I think you need to be aware of your own value here and that of your own time. You could give every waking moment away for free, and perhaps it you are starting out then you give up more "free" time but you need to draw a line on when your "free" advice and insight becomes commercial or you will simply starve. Your insight, knowledge, perspective and experience has value - you don't have to do stuff for free, or perhaps if you do not for long.

James what is that moment when it goes from free to commercial? Is there a moment, also when you have paying clients can you ask the free lot to start paying ? Interested as we launch a content service next year and we may start not at full pricing on the service and then build up to market rate retainers. Intrigued

From day 1 of my business coaching and growth consulting practice I have always followed “solving a business problem” or “bringing very impactful insight or blind spot” as part of my initial strategy session. I didn’t limit it by timeframe like 60mins or any. My focus was/is always to deliver impactful value from the initial conversations. I kind of focus on them from very beginning. With this many things get covered - trust, credibility and value for the time they spent. Then next steps automatically follow. If I had to follow up with them then either they not my ICPs (Ideal client Profile) or I did not do a good job in understanding their problem and solve it. Overall I fell it is not about FREE session. It is about VALUE discovery.

- Create a great lead magnet that solves a problem for your client. - Your first customers are likely within your existing network. Contact family, friends and old colleagues to let them know what problem you solve. - Create a strong sales strategy. - Consider a press strategy to maximise your exposure.
