You can, and should, invest time, interest, and finances in your team's development. I recommend having a holistic approach, i.e., both professional and personal development. This could be a technical course, a course in developing soft skills, health & wellness via company's health programs or even social. It is important to know what each individual needs and what the company can/is willing to offer and align them.

With my direct reports, I've always been transparent about which skills and experiences are needed at each step in the career ladder. With this, we can develop a matrix that also includes their skills and experiences by area. This allows for an easy way to identify gaps, which can then be included in a personal career development plan.

This was one of my favorite things to do with my associates. During their bi-weekly 1on1's I would spend a few minutes going over their performance, and how it aligned to goals/ metrics. Then I would spend another 15-20 going over their career goals, what they were passionate about, and how I could help. I never had attrition because an associate was unhappy working for me. I did however have attrition because I coached them up and coached them on to new and better things. This included going over their Linkedin, resume and background. Helping them come up with a strategy, and making it possible for them to execute it. Be that adjusting work hours/ schedules. Serving others, thats what good leaders do.

I would say listen, but a lot of people do not know what they want or what they like to do and learn. In my experience, people who want to develop are willing to volunteer and be involved in different projects that might be cross-departmental. This will allow them to be exposed to different departments and see if they like it. If they do like it, they should: 1. Feel comfortable talking to their manager so they can help them get more training. 2. The employer should provide the employee with the opportunity to learn and use that new skillset to benefit the organization while also providing the employee with professional development. Employees who feel heard and appreciated will work more and more efficiently than others.

Leaders should understand that they are as good as their team members. So they need to develop a mindset that they need to invest time, efforts, money for their team members' professional and personal development. This also helps them to delegate the tasks to team members so that leaders can focus on other tasks. More importantly by investing in their team members leaders create a succession path for themselves. When the time and need comes, it is easy for the leaders to move up/lateral by leaving their job to their team members and this becomes smooth transition.

Opportunities to showcase what they can do, often times a team is far more capable of doing more than they think they can. It is important to slightly push limits as this is a good way to develop the team and build their confidence all in one go. Growth occurs when there is a challenge to undertake make the challenge too simple no growth occurs, make the challenge to difficult and the team loses confidence.
