The most important thing to understand is to believe that there may be errors since it is a project and not a product. Projects have uncertainties and many stake holders. Information comes from various sources, there is schedule that needs to be met, you may not have the complete information to start the drg and information comes in stages. Although technology is gaining traction but still it is a human being making the drgs. So the planing starts with a good risk assesment which includes construction engineering risks. One of the better ways to carry out a good risk assessment for construction engineering is use of past lessons learnt as a starting point to identify risks. How many of us do that?

Use a Quality Management Program - A clear plan would be a quality management program that begins at the project kick-off to establish roles and responsibilities of the design team and the quality review of construction documents.

QAQC needs to be concurrent with design, not just at 30/60/90. A&Es also need to avoid working within trade silos and ushering their design teams into 3D spatial space considering interstitial spaces available. Along with all of the others, scope defined, roles defined, goals defined, workflows, tools etc. Always begin with the end in mind and consider the end users need and use of your specific deliverables.

Do not copy and paste project specifications So many jobs have boilerplate blanket specs that are not up to date, relevant, and corroborate with what is being constructed

From a residential perspective, adhering to established standards serves as an excellent foundational starting point. However, a common misconception is treating these standards as universally applicable, which often proves impractical. It is essential to continually adapt your standards in tandem with product offerings and pricing. For instance, a 50-foot wide high-ASP product naturally necessitates different "table stakes" compared to a 30-foot value rear-entry product. When introducing new product lines or integrating existing plans with fresh approaches, it is crucial to assess whether your standards and templates remain aligned with the evolving business landscape.

Templates are good. However you can also run into issues when using “templates” or previously used details, substrates etc. to try and maybe save time. Every project should have specific details and circumstances. All these should be made aware to the engineers and drafters, so they can in turn draft and draw the correct details and those details can be verified and confirmed.

Everyone should be utilizing standards and templates to START from. They should ALWAYS be reviewed by the designer, project engineer, and then the EOR.

Constructability reviews done by experienced construction people can help spot errors and especially omissions. Someone with the experience of taking a set of plans and getting it built in the field provides a different perspective in the review process that focuses more on their experiences of field problems that are often overlooked by designers. Other specialty experience relevant to the project (environmental, traffic safety, etc.) can provide another perspective. Having the review process done by several people that each have a different focus of experience is important to reduce errors and omissions.

It's all about the check and review game. In my world, meticulous scrutiny is the name of the game. We've learned that a second, third, or even fourth set of eyes can catch what one might miss. In my experience, the more eyes, the merrier, when it comes to ensuring those construction drawings are error-free.

Owners and design teams should embrace experience of construction managers to help deliver the best product possible. Allocating resources (time & money) for constructability reviews is a effective means of identifying gaps in design and addressing before they become costly.

The Design Manger for the Development team needs to schedule an Engineering peer review of the design documentation and provide a report inclusive of major observations with top 3-5 recommendations.

As per the design team, meetings prior for planning and review are mandatory. Templates and updates are so helpful. Corrections and review from three parties involved (design, contractor and consultant) is essential. Most importantly adhering to standards and codes in construction is a detrimental process.

In my experience, this is where a lot of errors originate…with either untimely/delayed update of drawings by the design team after decisions were made, or revised documents not making it down to the personnel installing the work in a timely manner. There are systems & technology in place that can make this process significantly easier to managed but ultimately take time on the front-end of a project to ensure all of the checks are in place to communicate changes to all pertinent parties - design, construction, clients, tiered subs/vendors, etc. The key project stakeholders (typically the owner, design team lead, & general contractor) should have a plan in place at the beginning of the project to establish protocols or processes.

Most of time execution team are not very proficinet reading draeings with respect to revisions and modifications, training is must for executors to avoid time and money wasteage using old drawings and doing rework.

When we update designs we must undertake the basic revision process as noted but the biggest thing we need to do is communicate that to the whole team because your revision may affect their works / design. this will allow errors more of a chance to be caught and resolved in the design and not on site where the cost implications can be vastly different.

I would say that is the key. For collaboration, integration, efficiency and minimizing errors, a stable and confident software and safe data environment is a must. Clash detection could help, but it is not the only capability. Working with updated information is also essential.

Your brain is the best technology around. You can use the tools available to help automate and delegate repetitive tasks. You have to decide on what those are and if the system and process setup have appropriate checks and balances in place to maintain a safe design.

We need efficient tools, that is clear. At least they should allow us to: -Model anything, anywhere -Read and consolidate anything -Report everything to inform everyone Freedom to design what you want, integrating the previous information (many different formats), consolidating the model and producing the best deliverables.

Technology is useful and consolidated SMEs (subject matter experts) inputs are required to avoid errors and be able to finalize construction drawings.

When a project is done, think about what went right and what went wrong. Learn for next time. It's like when you play a game and get better every time you play.

You should have a project close-out meeting after every project to capture lessons learned. I like to gather the team for 15 minutes MAX and do a P.A.S.T. review. Planned items original? Actual items completed? Story's on why things did or didn't go to plan? Teachings to learn for next time.

Un tema crucial con respecto a la elaboración de planos es que los dibujantes son normalmente los profesionales recién egresados de arquitectura o ingeniería o un perfil tipo técnico como delineante de arquitectura que no han tenido una experiencia en obra que les permita visualizar algunos errores, si bien en las construcciones siempre habrá temas que atender como modificaciones en niveles o algún cambio derivado de un proceso constructivo, muchos errores de planos se evitarían si estos fuesen revisados por una persona con experiencia en campo

In my experience, conduct workshop meetings to consolidate inputs from SMEs (subject matter experts) prior to finalization of construction drawings.

The design drawings are to be reviewed by a QS. If a QS can take out quantities from drawings, it can also be constructible. Most of the time, the site personnel executing the job sees the drawing when work is executed. A good QS can find most of the missing information in the drawing.

Involving a CM early to provide estimating and review of Architects/Engineers drawings will help eliminate any holes in the construction documents. This is not always an option, but will help ensure the owner will not have any surprises once construction starts depending on how your contract is written.

Complexity is an accumulation of simplicities. Construction design is an accumulation of supply chain specifications. It's the job of the designer to know how to ensure the supply chain provide to expectation. This takes teamwork and more than one project, but once the supply chain can supply drawing details/BIM objects to relevant LOD, specification which rigidly meets the relevant regulations, things start to come together. Having the right chain and even better when on framework, even better still - when then client buys into the development of design and risk, you then have buy-in from the top to bottom of the stakeholder chain. This removes guesswwork, and brings only structured design cost engineering. Removes whitenoise.

I feel there must be a clear communication between all the stakeholders during the conceptual stage of the design. A simple horizontal 'cut-out' of a size 150mm x150mm, 450mm below the soffit of the slab ( in a beam) with additional support bars or A simple 450mmx 450mm 12mm thick Insert Plate at the face of the column is simpler to execute prior concrete than later. Co-ordination with each stake-holder be it Execution, Finishing, Plumbing, Electrical, FireFighting, Facade, HVAC, Interior is a must.

El uso de la herramientas BIM, permite el conocer el proyecto, mas a detalle antes y durante su construccion. Nos permite detectar falta de informacion y omisiones. Un adecuado control de correcciones y actualizaciones de planos para su ejecucion. Consideremos que el costo de esta implementacion es menor al de enfrentar errores u omisiones. La construccion virtual antes de su construccion real, es la clave.
