Listening is the most important skill when it comes to business networking, and one many people seem to forget. While others are all making it about 'me me me', you should be focusing on other people. Ask them questions and let them speak. Listen to their answers. Make a note of what they're looking for, and how you can help them. It's what the best networkers do - help others first, and that all starts with listening.

As an introvert, I have found much success in knowing and respecting my own boundaries. If I start to feel tired or overwhelmed in a large social gathering, I take some time to step away, find a quiet space, and simply be. This intentional act of removing myself will ensure I can provide my full, genuine, and authentic presence when engaging with those in that space. It is about being self-aware for my own sake and that of others.

The best tip I can give, as an introvert who actively doesn't like networking, is to be the first to arrive. I always attempt to arrive before the advertised start time, so that I'm not walking into a room full of people. As the first to arrive, or among the first, I can see where I need to be, save a space and speak to people as they arrive. It's much less daunting than walking into a room full of people.

Business networking isn't about meeting more and more people, and passing lots of business cards. As an introvert, this will be great to hear! Instead business networking is about forming meaningful relationships with a smaller circle of people who are able to help you, and whom you are also able to help. This reduces the number of new people you need to meet each week and month, and instead means you're more comfortable meeting with people with whom you're already familiar.
