How can you secure cloud deployment and orchestration?

To make the cloud a secure place, remember the principle of Shared Responsibility Model, i.e Maintaining the Security 'in' the cloud is the responsibility of the user. Make sure to add encryption wherever needed, allow only certain specific ports for accepting your network traffic. Make use of Security Groups for securing your servers, use NACL for securing the network, use WAF for securing the Web Applications. Most importantly, follow the rule of Least Privilege by providing only the specified permissions to the user.

Recently I encountered one method of authentication which is webauthn. Big corp can give it a try but for general use I think there nothing more secure than biomatrics

Companies need to have a 'dedicated team' to authenticate new users rather than relying solely on identity federation. The members of this special team will be super experts on cloud security. The members of this expert group will give authorization on how much power will be given to a user, who will do any responsibility on the cloud platform. If this is ensured, the cloud security of the company will not be much of a headache.

I guess people should move to quantum-proof encryption as It's not far from a time where encrypted data can be breached using quantum computing

Encrypting data and communication in a cloud platform infrastructure is a crucial step in enhancing the security of your information. Some aspects of encryption can be discussed in the context of the AWS cloud platform. 1. For Amazon S3 bucket encryption use SSE, SSE-KMS, or SSE-C. 2. Encryption for Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes attached to your EC2 instances. 3. RDS provides options for encrypting database instances. 4. End-to-end encryption is used for the application level. 5. AWS Key Management Service (KMS), Customer-Managed Keys , CloudTrail and CloudWatch logs, Container and Orchestrations security (Amazon EKS and ECS).

In my experience it is imperative to have time, each week, to go on a bear hunt…a trawl through your logs for anything suspicious or untoward. This seems like waste of time, but it is vital to have head-space (10%) each day, just to review with no specific target, just go fishing in your own pond.

Regularly test and review your security measures to identify vulnerabilities and ensure ongoing resilience. Conduct penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, and security audits to proactively address potential weaknesses.

Two often overlooked aspects of security: integrity and availability, are even more complicated to get right in the cloud. Make sure you have plans for if your cloud provider fails (e.g. dissolves, get hacked, changes policies, steals your data, accidentally deletes all your data). This usually means working with multiple cloud providers so you can switch between them easily. It also means policies for data synchronization, preservation, error detection and intrusion detection. Keep in mind that modern cloud solutions do not have a definitive perimeter that you can use to simplify protecting your services. Hence, each deployed component is responsible for securing itself to the required specification.

It is very good practice to have internal and external testing of your security. Find people with time on their hands - and offer bonus for finding faults internally. Hire external company for professional intrusion testing,to find holes.

Secure your backup and restore process. Cloud means off-site but dont assume you will have access, say from fire or flooding events. You may move to temp accomodation, or from home where network slower, poorer. Is it sufficient? So just like a fire-alarm, which you test every week. Test your ability to recover files, servers and processes. Consider small on-site systems, and large cloud systems. Be able to fallover from one to other, seamlessly. Test this every two weeks - even if just one file you delete, and ensure you can restore it.
