In my experience, it is critical to have an independent conversation with your manager about your career plan that is independent of your performance plan. While the performance plan discusses KPIs and objectives in your current role, the career plan will focus on your aspirations and readiness for your next role and the support required for the same. At the right time, it is also important to align your career plan with your manager's manager and the HR head of your division to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

This article reminds of the 6 tips in Chapter 5 (Be Proactive about Career Advancement) in the book @Fast Start to Career Success. Tip 3 in Chapter 1 is also good advice: Promotions result from mastering your current job and demonstrating your ability to help the company even more by having more responsibility.
