How can you tell a compelling story about your setbacks?

My work crosses many cultures, and common to all people is the ability to communicate through story. We bring others close to us, we empower and engage others with a compelling story. We help others experience the same emotions we feel by telling a story. When you’re clear on your story, you can confidently share it with audiences as you wish. If you’re not clear you make it almost impossible for them to relate and be inspired by you. When crafting the story consider: 1. Your message and audience 2. Create the story structure: Hook, middle, and strong ending. Practice framing your messages into stories to connect with your audience. Show authenticity, and relate to the needs, goals, and challenges of those you seek to influence.

Drawing upon my years as both a seasoned small business owner and a retired US military NCO, I've come to recognize the immense value of storytelling. Storytelling is not just an art; it's a strategic tool that transcends boundaries and resonates deeply with people. In the business world, it's a way to forge connections, evoke emotions, and leave lasting impressions. Storytelling is a dynamic force that has transcended both my military and entrepreneurial experiences. Its ability to convey authenticity, engage audiences, and simplify communication cannot be overstated. Whether rallying troops or captivating customers, the power of storytelling remains a cornerstone of success in every facet of life.

A good story has a character who changes. The story is the transformation. When it's your story someone else is the guide. When it's your customer's story, they're the hero who is transforming and you're the guide.

Another pitfall is an in-cohesive story. The story of your pitfall needs to end with your transformation as a result of the pitfall. Answer this: Where were you trying to go, and after the pitfall what did you do and why.

As with success stories, keep asking yourself *why* this story needs to be shared. Is it topical? Is it useful to your audience? Is it self indulgent? Is there something to learn and build from? It's very easy to stray into meme sharing the "inspiration" of setbacks. Stick to your own stories. Interrogate your intent and purpose, and the value and applicability of each component of the story to your audience.
