One of the greatest skills a leader can have related to this is the power of reflection. Reflecting on how you communicate, motivate, and respond to challenges your distinctive approach to leadership.

Understanding and recognizing one's leadership style is critical for effective self-presentation and demonstrating leadership abilities. The first step toward leveraging prior experiences is to reflect on the traits, attitudes, and behaviors that characterize how we lead. - I believe that my leadership style contains democratic components, such as respecting cooperation and input from team members. - I believe in creating an environment in which ideas can be freely discussed and decisions can be taken jointly. - Communication, motivation, and cooperation are essential components of my leadership style, which aims to foster a good and inclusive team environment.

Identifying your leadership style is a journey of self-discovery that enhances how you guide others. Reflect on your leadership qualities and seek feedback to refine your approach.

Identifying your leadership style sets the tone for crisp communication in a job interview and/or in your daily core routine as a leader * Knowing your strengths should make you choose a leadership style and then you see results when you double down on it. Example, if your strengths/past success have shown you are best suited for a transformational leadership style, you double down on it before picking a new style. That way the probability of seeing good results are higher because you're doing what comes naturally to you. * Being yourself in an interview is critical. Even if you do not make it, it's because you aren't suited for the role per your leadership style. Communication comes easily post this.

The first thing that comes to mind is the STAR method of responding to questions. It is a good organized tool that allows you to stay on topic . It also allows you to examine how you perceived a situation and how it was perceived by others. As you discuss the risks and your response to the situation, you are able to identify why you made the decisions you chose. The results may be favorable or unfavorable at that particular time but it shows your thought process as a leader and your ability to successfully move forward or to learn from shortcomings and redirect future actions.

2 base level tips when citing examples * Choose the what ?, why ? , how ? & when ? route. Structuring your examples in this format gives a clear explanation of the impact you created & how you contributed to the goal. * Always close the examples with what was your learning/takeaway from that illustration. A lot of us make positive impacts at what we do, verbalizing it is what sells best in an interview and while mentoring too.

When demonstrating leadership skills in a job interview, you should choose examples that resonate with your identified leadership style. Recall instances of initiative, problem-solving, project leadership, or influencing others—whether from work, education, volunteering, or personal life. Highlight positive impact or goal contributions, even if not from formal leadership roles. Align your examples with the job description, company culture, and industry, demonstrating your adaptability and value to the specific role.

We "choose relevant examples" to display our leadership skills by taking time on a regular basis to review what has happened in various life events. That reflection enables us to build up a storehouse of relevant examples that we can draw from regularly when the situation demands. Thus, we draw from our past learning to answer questions, as well as to respond to situations as they arise.

Choose specific experiences from your past that align with the leadership style you want to convey. Consider situations where you took on leadership roles or played a significant part in a team's success.

use the BIO Model. Explain the past BEHAVIOR Elaborate on the IMPACT of the said behavior Expound on what other OPTIONS can be done to make it even better and how this can help the current situation

I like to add an "L" for learning to the STAR model whereby at the end my example I add "and what I learned was..." or "in hindsight, I would do x or y differently". Another acronym is CAR (easy to remember like driving a CAR) which stands for: Context (setting the base of the story) Action (that was taken by the candidate in the story), and Result (the end result due to this action taken). You can add "L" for learning to this too.

If you are using the STAR approach it allows you to briefly exhibit your talents as a candidate by detailing the circumstance, problems, your position, and the measures taken to overcome hurdles, while successfully presenting the accomplished outcomes or successes. Begin by detailing how the initial scenario resulted in a decrease in productivity, quality, engagement, or income. Following that, underline your critical involvement in addressing the issues and creating a solution. Finally, demonstrating results through SMART goal response, it increases in productivity, quality, engagement, or income over a set timeframe. A good approach is to address any issues that the prospective employer is presently dealing with.

I am a big fan of STAR Model. I will add another expect of story telling. Using STAR model and telling a story of your relevant past experience is always powerful. STAR helps you stay organized in your narration and story adds an interest in the content for the listener. You dont need to complete the entire STAR, sometimes, explain the situation and your action and result, situation is important, rest is all on the story you want to tell.

When preparing for an interview, I recommend looking through the position and coming up with your "STAR" stories that align with the job description and expectations for the role. Taking the perspective of it being a "STAR" story, reminds you to be detailed, descriptive and keeps you as the main character. Take the panel on the hero's journey if needed. In addition, you can add a "T" for any takeaways or key learnings from the experience.

1.Situation (S):Begin by setting the stage, providing context about the specific situation or challenge you faced. 2.Task (T):Clearly outline the task or objective you needed to accomplish in that situation. 3.Action (A):Detail the specific actions you took to address the task, focusing on your leadership role and decision-making. 4.Result (R):Highlight the positive outcomes or achievements resulting from your leadership and actions. 5.Quantify Impact: Use measurable metrics or key performance indicators to quantify the impact of your leadership. 6.Relevance to Job Role: Connect the example to the job role you're interviewing for, demonstrating the transferability of your leadership skills to the prospective position.

Walk me through your resume. With 5 yrs, 15 yrs, and 25 years of experience will the time vary to answer this basic question? If you think yes; THINK TWICE. No one will give you an extra second to listen to your 'WHAT', they need the 'WHY'( skills) and as a senior leader' WHO' ( Competencies ) generated in your answer. If you can create the difference and convey it in the same time as 5 years; you have aced the game.

Ever been in an interview where the interviewee gives a one sentence response; no examples, energy and passion, or interest in elaborating on their experience and unique attributes? This happens all the time unfortunately. A stellar response requires format and deep thought into not only the answer to the question, but how to differentiate yourself from other candidates. Utilizing the STAR method as a foundation is a great way to formulate a comprehensive response, in addition to highlighting various opportunities where leadership skills were organically presented. This is where I’d also suggest describing how leadership actions made a lasting impact on the team and organization.

* A common gap seen here is the confusion between what's your strength and what's your skill. To say i didn't give up and kept communicating highlights your resilience as a strength versus communication as a skill * Communicating the how/why do you feel you have a grip on a particular skill is important. * It's great to believe that you have a particular skill, verbalizing that "why" by citing STAR method examples packages it really well in an interview

In job interviews, I strategically highlight my leadership skills by aligning past experiences with the job requirements. Instead of merely stating achievements, I emphasize the skills utilized in those situations. For instance, if the role requires effective communication, I share instances where my leadership involved clear and impactful communication, underscoring not just what I did but how my skills made a difference.

The third step is to explain the task or goal you had to accomplish, using the T (task) part of the STAR technique. You should describe what you were expected to do, why it was important, and what the desired outcome was. For example, you can say: “The task was to design, develop, test, and deploy a web application that met the client’s specifications and expectations. The goal was to deliver a high-quality product on time and within budget, and to ensure the client’s satisfaction and loyalty.”

This demonstrates versatility. 5.Relate your examples to the requirements of the job, ensuring your responses align with what the interviewer is seeking. 6.Stay Concise and Focused: Keep your responses concise and directly related to the question, avoiding unnecessary details that may not be relevant.

𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Connect your experiences to the job’s leadership requirements, demonstrating your communication skills, critical thinking, and adaptability.

In job interviews, adapting to different questions has been key to showcasing my leadership skills. Instead of rehearsed responses, I tailor my examples to match the specific skills the interviewer is seeking. This not only demonstrates my ability to think on my feet but also shows that my leadership experience is versatile and directly applicable to the role.

A fruitful approach is to workshop stories with a coach or mentor, exploring them from multiple angles. It helps you articulate your experiences more naturally but also unveils diverse ways to align the same story with different interview questions. Preparing more than one story creates a versatile narrative toolkit. This flexibility allows for quick adaptation to various questions, enabling a more spontaneous and confident presentation of your leadership. The key is to weave experiences into responses that highlight your leadership skills in a relatable and impactful way. Engaging in this kind of thoughtful preparation ensures that your leadership stories are not only heard but resonate deeply with interviewers.

It's not about having the "perfect" answer for every question. It's about demonstrating your adaptability, resourcefulness, and the depth of your leadership arsenal. Be a storyteller, not a statistician: Weave your examples into narratives that captivate the interviewer. Paint a picture of the challenge, the stakes, your actions, and the triumphant (or learning-filled) outcome. Make them feel the adrenaline rush of your leadership, not just read about it in a boring bullet point. Think of each interview question as a unique beat in the music. Some questions are slow and graceful, others are fast and furious, demanding a quick-witted response. Your job is to adapt your steps, your storytelling, your very essence to match the rhythm.

It is critical to practice and seek feedback in order to improve your ability to display leadership qualities during a job interview. Consider recording your examples and arranging them using the STAR technique to enhance this skill. Take it a step further by practicing orally, whether through self-rehearsal, recording, or role-playing with peers, mentors, or coaches. Feedback is an important tool for continuous improvement. Seek constructive feedback, recommendations, or praises on your comments. This not only improves the content of your responses, but it also helps you to fine-tune your delivery, build your confidence, and improve your whole body language.

Our best answers are not pulled carelessly off the cuff. Instead, we have carefully thought through examples of how we applied our accumulated experiences to address organizational challenges. Those past wins fuel our self-confidence as we face new challenges.

I ask my employees to keep a “live document” with examples and categorize them. I remind them occasionally that the job opportunities (interviews) are coming, and it is just a matter of time. In other words, practice. Concerning the examples, as a leader, I emphasize that they get familiar with the job description and the interview dimensions; this way, they can showcase their best example. I encourage them to complete mock interviews with me and other co-workers so that the employee can receive multiple perspectives and appropriate feedback regarding their STAR format response. One last action is to be proactive and reach out to employees in that department, even to complete a job shadowing before the interview and ask questions.

In my experience coaching leaders in this space, it is one thing to use the STAR method and think about the experiences you want to discuss. It is an entirely different step to practice with those you trust to receive their input and feedback. Recently, working with one leader going through the interview process in their practice we discovered they were using the phrase "umm" after every other sentence without having awareness of this occurring. Just that bit of feedback assisted them in adjusting in preparation for the interviews to come giving the them the opportunity to accept an offer. Practice with a few individuals that will give you open and honest feedback so that your preparation can match your true potential.

MAKE THAT HYPE DOC! Creating a hype doc is a game-changer for job interviews. It’s your personal highlight reel, showcasing your leadership skills through past experiences - getting to drill down on successes and achievements that don't read well in a CV. By detailing key projects, critical metrics, successful initiatives, and impactful decisions, you provide concrete evidence of your abilities. This not only boosts your confidence but also makes it easier for interviewers to see your value. Imagine walking into an interview with a tailored portfolio that speaks directly to the job’s requirements—it's impressive and memorable. Some quick tips * Carry a pen/paper to structure your thoughts before answering a question. Even if the question is subjective, make a note of broad pointers before beginning your response * Take 10- 15 seconds to introspect the question. A Delayed answer is better than an Incorrect answer. It's okay to breathe it out and say that you need 10-15 seconds to structure your thoughts. To me it shows awareness. * Be yourself, It's okay to not crack an interview than to be in one which wasn't suited for you. The selection in the right role sets you up for success right when you sign up.
