How can you use stakeholder engagement to identify sustainability challenges in your career?

Talk to colleagues, clients, etc. about sustainability in your field. This can reveal hidden challenges, knowledge gaps, and ethical dilemmas. Industry events and volunteering can offer similar insights. By engaging with stakeholders, you get a broader view of sustainability issues impacting your career.

When you think about accelerating sustainability in your organization, you’ll necessarily need to act with all of your stakeholders. No one can do sustainability alone, for it is a lens to be applied to all processes and relationships. However, each of them will need their own purpose, need, or challenge respected and leveraged. It is critical to understand “what is in it for them.” Investors want to minimize risks; workers want to work for a place they are proud of, doing what’s best for people and the planet; clients want transparency to make informed decisions; activists want to push companies to further commit. After that, understand who the positive influencers in each group are and work with them to create your engagement strategy.

Sustainability can't be imagined and materialized in the absence of Stakeholders. In any organization Stakeholders play a vital role either the Stakeholders are internal or external. Every Stakeholders influence organization differently and helps organization to grow. Important point to identify the Stakeholders, Stakeholders could be who influences positively or negatively. Do they have time for a deep conversation? Are they emotional or objective? How many are there? Is it a person, like a CEO, or a large group of employees or suppliers? Who influences them? Contact: Think of the best points of contact to approach them. A one-on-one conversation? An email? A formal meeting or presentation? An experience? Taking them to feel and see the challenge or opportunity at hand in person is very powerful. Content: Craft the best content possible for each and remember: it’s okay to change the tone for each audience.
