How can you use your strengths to get promoted?

Enhancing self-awareness regarding one's strengths and weaknesses provides a comprehensive understanding of areas requiring improvement in alignment with the qualifications requisite for promotion. A promotion signifies not merely advancing one step, but also preparing oneself for the elevated challenges accompanying the new role. Such challenges encompass broadening one's horizons, collaborating with diverse teams, delving into uncharted domains of expertise, and adeptly managing various resources. Identifying and harnessing one's strengths in these domains, while aligning with the role's job description, ultimately brings the opportunity of a promotion.

In my opinion, to identify strength that could help me get promoted, I should reflect on my past work experience and accomplishments by getting feedback from managers and colleagues about my strengths and development areas. I also try to understand the requirements of the role I want to get promoted and assess how my skills align with those requirements.

Work with a Coach to identify your strengths. It can be really hard to think of your strengths alone, and talking through your experiences with a Coach is a great way to highlight them!

After identifying your strengths, think about how to use them to deliver on top 2 priorities of your senior leadership, your supervisor and of business unit. These have to be aligned with team objectives contributing to top 2 goals. Once you achieve it, you have to market your achievement. To get the promotion, you must already be demonstrating the potential of your next role through your skills, strengths in current role. Ask for more responsibility, challenges

People don't realize this - but you control the narrative about you that other people tell. It's your brand, and it's in your control. Here's the secret: people will just repeat what you say. (People are lazy). So if you want to be known as, say, a great storyteller - just walk around saying "I love storytelling. It's what I do." Obviously you have to back it up with the goods (this is important!) But pretty soon, people will start repeating what you say. And then people who may not have even worked with you will know you as "the good storyteller." You'll get more projects with storytelling opportunities, and you'll develop and showcase your skills more. It builds on itself. And it all starts with the story you tell.

But don't overlook the power of reflection or feedback from colleagues. Once you've pinpointed your strengths, prioritize them. Showcase them in any way possible, rewrite the cv to highlight them, ask for recommendations (for example on your LinkedIn profile), use your year end assessments. In an interview, when a weakness question comes up, find a way to answer it by highlighting a strength ( I don't know how to do x, but I am a fast learner)

You have to be able to self-regulate so you can contribute the right thing at the right time. Developing your strengths is a practice. Don’t worry about being perfect but do aim to make progress day in and day out.

The most useful advice I received was: understand what happens when you overuse a strength. Knowing our strengths and what we can do is great, but there's also power in knowing how we are affected by leaning too much in them or using them at the wrong time. Use that self-awareness to see where and how you can practice new behaviors and skills that will help you be more adaptable and flex your strengths.

Each employee has his/her own waiting period and should follow their instinct on how long they are ready to give themselves before taking a decision. There are times, when there is absence of a role, it is prudent to move horizontally, broaden skills and network. Lastly, one should focus on their skills/craft, career will follow and satisfaction in the long run. Focusing on career at the expense of craft has a limited runway.

Take on leadership roles: Demonstrate your leadership potential by taking the initiative to lead projects or teams. Showcase your ability to guide and inspire others, as well as your capacity to make informed decisions based on your strengths. This demonstrates your readiness for higher-level responsibilities. Build relationships and seek feedback: Cultivate relationships with key decision-makers and influencers within your organization. Seek feedback from supervisors, mentors, or trusted colleagues on how you can further leverage your strengths and position yourself for promotion. Actively seek opportunities for mentorship or sponsorship that can help you navigate your career path.
