How can you write better resumes and cover letters?

Es clave revisar el CV y adaptarlo al puesto y empresa a la que nos estamos postulando. Para cada oferta, debemos adaptarlo aplicando palabras clave, habilidades, conocimientos, etc. Para que pueda alinearse con lo que busca la empresa. Siempre acorde a la misión, visión y valores de la organización. Se aconseja adaptar todo, tanto experiencias, formación reglada, etc. Adaptarlo puede hacerlo diferente al del resto de candidaturas captando la atención del reclutador. Ese es el primer objetivo, que se paren a leer nuestro CV.

Knowing your audience is all well and good but you have to start somewhere. I did not read about having a master resume that you can use as a template and you absolutely should. Writing a resume takes a long time and there is no need to start from scratch. A master resume allows you to have that starting point. You know that your contact information isn't going to change, and your education isn't going to change, (more than likely). Mostly what is going to change is the body of the resume and even that should be tailored to the job post, which you are applying for the same type of jobs, then it is only certain words.

Your resume needs to be customized to each job you are applying for because the one size fits all approach no longer works. In addition, a cover letter is no longer needed. It was useful in the days of fax machines and regular mail, but today it won't make it through a ATS easily. The resume should tell your story, accomplishments, and expertise.

In a 25 year recruiting career I would advise this: Use the simplest cleanest format you can. I happen to love the resume on BlueSkyResumes (add the .com) for their clarity. (I have no affiliation with BlueSky.) Don't be deceived into buying the concept that an "eye-catching" resume increases your chances. What is most eye-catching is a resume which clearly shows your qualifications.

The right format will support great content, but it will never compensate for poor content. Write powerful and robust content first and then look for format elements that enable the important parts of your information to be seen. This includes enough white space for readability, small amounts of strategic bolding and clear headings. Think of your format as scaffolding for your content.

I can see University students nowadays choosing format over content and they spend so much time trying to fit their studies, experience, languages and skills into a format that does not work for them, but looks "fancy". Stop and think: what does the recruiter need? Easy reading, clear headlines and answers to the main questions: - Where are you now? - What is your relevant experience? - When can I hire you? Yes, format plays a role in certain types of companies and industries: if you are going for a very trendy company and a marketing role, probably the traditional (or boring, as my students call it) template will not cut it. So keep format into account but don't let it "break" your head and take all your time.

In a 25 year recruiting career, I can attest that unless the resume shows the jobseeker is qualified, I will not read a cover letter. When I do read a cover letter I'm not looking for a rehash of the resume. I'm looking for information, e.g., relocation concerns and compensation parameters.

"To whom it may concern" on a Cover Letter gets the "who vs whom" rule correct, but the job search rules HORRIBLY wrong! Always personalize the contact information. If you can't find the exact person, default to "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Human Resources Professional"

I agree. The cover letter should communicate your enthusiasm for working with that organization, your knowledge of what that organization stands for and hopes to accomplish, as well as why you align with that employer. The resume tells about your accomplishments. The cover letter sells you as the best fit for the position. Make sure it is never over one page and should not include more than 3 paragraphs ideally. Also, put your contact information on there even if it on your resume/CV. Make it easy for the hiring manager to reach out to you!

The tip I give my clients is to think of your resume as your 'pitch' not your story. Build your content to focus on your skills, experiences and achievements relevant to the role you are applying for. Make sure your opening summary makes a concise case for your fit. Customise your content. If it's not relevant, minimise or remove it. If it's important, make sure they can find it. Make your case for why you are their dream hire for this role. Most importantly, evidence your skills through strong achievements that show you can do the job.

Besides proof reading, revising with them and using AI tools to check, we often recommend our students a simple but useful activity: when you have finished writing your CV, give it to someone to read who doesn't know you too well (so not your mum). Give them 30 seconds and close the laptop. Now ask them: What do you know about me? If all they remember is your picture and your contact details you are not getting the job ;-)

Recruiters nowadays often receive waaaaaaaay too many applications. It is therefore unlikely that they will be able to get back to every candidate. So, when my students are very eager to join a company and they are a good fit for the position, we will often encourage them to call the relevant recruiter and ask: 1. if they have received their application; 2. and how the recruitment process works. That way, they ensured that their application is being reviewed, and they understand the time line. And nowadays, university students will not call so easily (emails feel "safer"), so the recruiter knows that the candidate is definitely interested!

Every certified resume writer will give you their advice. There will be a lot of things they agree on, and even more that they disagree on. The bottom line is use the advice that fits you. There should be a reason for every change and that reason should not br "I am certified".

Great advice has been shared here. Additionally, job seekers should consider creating a video resume. Because of the advancement of technology, many employers are considering video resumes as an option to get a more real-life/personality-driven perpective of the job candidate.

Your resume isn't just a "this is what I did" or "this is what I know " document. Your resume should be treated like marketing material, an advertisement of sorts that doesn't speak only about your skills and experience but what pain points you can address for your next employer and the outcomes that achieves. Knowing how to appeal to the person on the other side should be your aim.
