Knowing your audience is the most important factor. Without a doubt. Giving them what they want (subliminally) is important (which is why so many of us borrow from others, in order to give the audience something they are already familiar with). Connecting with your audience musically and emotionally is where things become interesting. This can be via lyrics or a melody.

I see a lot of "advice" on here from people who have never connected to anyone with their theoretically correct but artistically dead songs. These people try to make songwriting into some kind of industrial sausage factory. It is not. It is art, first and foremost. Our job as songwriters is to communicate, to connect, to reach people who will never write a song and make them sing along with ours, help them find themselves in our stories. If all you are is a rucksack of demographic studies, you will never make art, you will never write songs. You will merely create banal, asinine 'content.' You are not a songwriter, you are a bilge pump.

Consider not writing for a specific audience. People like music that's genuine, from the heart. So even if you're writing about something esoteric to people in your circle, it'll resonate with people on a broader scale, as we all experience humanity in similar ways. There's nothing new under the sun, as one wise writer once said.

Just looking at this purely from a sync angle, it’s obvious to pretty much everyone in the music industry when someone has written a song to a brief (i.e. for a specific audience) - it comes across as forced and inauthentic, and music supervisors will routinely advise against trying to do it this way. It’s not to say that a great songwriter can’t take a brief as inspiration and come up with something which is incredible, but if you’re trying to force yourself to write an upbeat indie pop song for ice cream lovers for the next Walls ad, chances are it won’t be your best work! Writing to brief can be a really useful creative exercise in its own right, but primarily I’d advise writing for yourself - it’s marketing’s job to find the audience.
