How do you create a safe and supportive environment for innovation across different functions and levels?

One thing I find helpful in empowering and motivating a team is to make the vision very clear and keep the team informed and involved all the way. Sometimes if you are an entrepreneur your vision can be your baby, and it's easy to become isolated in your thoughts because very often your are the only one who understands that dream best. However, share these dreams and visions with your team. Not only will it make them understand your determination but it will also Inspire them to have their aspirations within the organisation, and outside. If you can do it, they can right? Not everyone wants to run their own business so bringing your team on board with your vision can create some amazing intrepreneurial skills from your team members.

From my experience, establishing a culture of innovation begins with crafting a compelling vision that resonates with every facet of the organization. This vision must inspire and provide direction, differentiating us in the marketplace, while aligning seamlessly with our core values for effective decision-making. I believe this is foundational for creating an environment conducive to innovation across all functions and levels.

The vision of a company should be a torchbearer, guiding all the actions and decisions within the organization. It needs to be clear, inspiring, and centered around the core values of the organization. It's a combination of a dream for the future and a beacon that illuminates the path to get there. When the vision is articulated clearly, it ignites passion and sparks innovation among the team members.

Giving people autonomy alone isn’t sufficient - it is leading by example. That doesn’t mean failing intentionally! Some other approaches that could be helpful include: - admitting that an experiment was not successful, and explaining your pivot - giving others the opportunity to provide feedback to an idea, without the responsibility of delivering it - creating spaces for experimentation (such as virtual teams or hackathons) that put people into a mindset of working collaboratively on short term experiments

Early in my career, I had a manager that was extremely Instrumental in pushing me in my personal development at work. My manager saw skill sets within me I wasn't able to contextualise because of my inexperience so he found courses for me that would be helpful. This set the bar for me In understanding the management styles I preferred.  I flourished working with leaders that didn't micro-manage and hoard power. And I wanted to make sure I did the same. I like to see my team empowered in their work and accomplishments yet equipped in finding solutions during difficulties. I don't like seeing people stressed out and unhinged. What's the point of anything if it gets like that, is it even a team anymore?

Fostering innovation involves empowering teams with the autonomy, resources, and support they require to take initiative and bring their ideas to fruition. It is essential to foster cross-functional collaboration and a learning culture that not only tolerates, but celebrates, both successes and instructive failures. I firmly believe that recognizing their contributions bolsters an environment of trust and drives the innovative spirit across all tiers.

Empowerment is the fuel that drives innovation. When team members are provided with autonomy, resources, and a supportive environment, they feel encouraged to take ownership and initiative. This boosts their morale, increases their engagement, and ultimately leads to a surge in creativity and innovation. Embrace a culture of trust, where mistakes are viewed as opportunities to learn rather than failures.

Innovation thrives when we break free from the shackles of assumptions and biases. Encourage a culture of curiosity and questioning within the organization. Foster a culture where diversity of thought is celebrated and new perspectives are welcomed. This challenges the status quo and breeds innovation.

It’s important to foster an environment where people aren't made to feel silly for making mistakes. When team members feel supported and valued, they're more likely to speak up and share their ideas. This can significantly reduce the fear of failure, leading to a more confident and creative team.

As an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Specialist and Vice President of a Charity with a vision for diversity in the boardroom. This is the mindset I encourage people to adopt all the time. "Diversity of Thought" is having your input through the lens of your expertise and experiences, whilst also respectfully and optimistically hearing the thoughts of others. Being open to participation in conversations where you can learn and apply the outcomes to goals and objectives. I've had intersectional assumptions ranging from the colour of my skin, my gender, and my socioeconomic background. Ask yourself, What does an Executive on the board making decisions look like? What do they sound like? Who's sitting next to them? Is the vision diverse?

Innovation is a journey of discovery, and experimentation is the vehicle that takes us there. Encourage the team to embrace uncertainty and test their ideas. Be flexible and ready to pivot or adapt based on feedback and results. The aim should be to learn from each experiment, iterate, and continuously improve.

I was only just discussing this with my team yesterday and referenced how we sometimes implement a process or setup only to later review and adjust it. As although it's crucial to plan and consider all the elements and any knock on effects, it’s important to not spend too much time planning & perfecting things to the point where they never materialise or become outdated. This aligns with my previous viewpoint on promoting a culture that embraces making mistakes and doesn't make a big deal out of them. When your team feel comfortable with the idea of making mistakes, they become more open to the concept of suggesting and running with things on the understanding that they may require adjustments in the future.

I had an experience within higher education where a department of people made a decision academic staff could do a certain role that wasn't open to professional staff. Because the assumption was that it had always been done that way. I wanted to widen the option for the participation of others and looked into this. I found it was an unwritten rule no one knew where it started. Everyone was relieved to find we now had more options and more choices in our work. This experiment or as some may call it having a hunch. This led to a small piece of innovation.

Innovation is a continuous learning process. Foster a culture of continuous learning and development within the organization. Encourage team members to seek feedback, learn from it, and grow. Provide them with opportunities for professional development and upskilling. A culture of continuous learning and growth fuels innovation.

Make doing a post-mortem, or debrief if you prefer, part of every project. This ensures you're evaluating the success, or failure, of the project and how the team accomplished it. Good post-mortems focus are grounded in if the project met the clearly defined goals and require the project members participating to bring strong points of view. One of my favorite post-mortem sayings is "attack the problem, not the person" this helps ensure that the team is focused on what worked/did not work, not who did the work.

Leadership plays a crucial role in fostering innovation. As a leader, model the behavior you want to see in your team. Show your commitment to innovation, take risks, and learn from failures. Demonstrate a growth mindset and inspire your team to follow suit.

Remember that creating a culture of innovation doesn't happen overnight. It's a journey that requires patience, persistence, and commitment. Celebrate small wins along the way to keep the team motivated. Lastly, make sure to align your innovation strategy with your overall business goals and objectives to ensure meaningful outcomes.

In my journey with Write Right, I've realized that a safe and supportive environment is pivotal for fostering innovation.
