How do you demonstrate the impact and quality of your research outputs?

Citations build on a system that is inequitable for new researchers. Relying solely on citation metrics can introduce bias in ways that can limit careers or success. A holistic approach needs to focus on accessibility and impact of the research, not just through citations - kind of like the Broader Impacts via NSF.

Sometimes the articles with strong research content do not get cited a lot because the research has been conducted in a less explored area or a topic that is not widely popular. Therefore, citations metric cannot reliably reflect the strength or quality of the research. An important parameter worth consideration is the indexing of the journal. If the journal is indexed in a reputable collection, it matters more than the number of citations.

I do agree that citation metrics can be somewhat problematic. Part of the issue is that for folks who do research in under explored areas with journals that do not belong to the various recognized databases, it can be hard for others to find your work. Google Scholar seems to do a decent job of capturing some of those publications from open access journals and ones not in library databases, but the system is not perfect at all.

Not all peer-review process is created equal across the journals. Make sure to think about the feedback as constructive with goal of improving your study, such as making it easier to understand what you are presenting. The better peer-review process will not only offer constructive feedback to improve the writing and presentation of the research but also point to existing studies that may be relevant to what you are writing about - again the goal of improving the manuscript’s quality and impact if changes are made and accepted to the journal.

The peer review process is very interesting. As a doc student I thought it was a very systematic process and authors got a fair chance. However, now having published a lot it is more political and your review experience can heavily depend on the reviewers and the journal editor. Despite its drawbacks I do see the value in still having a peer review process. I do think a change is needed in terms of reviewers getting paid for their service.
