How do you design e-learning courses for multilingual learners?

No matter what, you need to value what your learners bring to the table. Their expertise, their prior knowledge, their personality and their culture all contribute to how they will engage with your content. One of the biggest mistakes I've seen in course materials is assuming that gaps in knowledge equates to a low level generally. There can also be cultural differences related to learning and how to interact in a learning environment that could make it difficult for a learner to show off what they know. Get to know your learners better and then create opportunities for them to quickly move through lessons that are redundant for them. This will keep them engaged and confident.

One of the most important lessons I learned from my teaching certification was how to ask concept-checking questions (CCQs). CCQs are questioned that are designed to check that an idea was actually understood. The best CCQs mimic real world use of a concept, so that students can internalize the concept outside the classroom. For example, instead of a gap-fill to check a vocabulary word, ask a personalized question using that word. For example: Instead of -- Fill in the blank: "Companies need to avoid ____ chain disruption." (supply) Try -- "Give an example of supply chain disruption caused by the pandemic."

If you don't know about your learners' culture, you have three options: 1. Find someone who does know about it and PAY THEM to write content; 2. Avoid specifically mentioning their culture in order to avoid your own personal biases; or 3. Learn more about their culture so you can write content which is inclusive enough. Many people think they can do #3 without much effort and would actually be better off doing #2. However, the best option is #1 because you are not only being inclusive, but you're supporting the communities your learners belong to. They will 100% appreciate that effort.

Two tips: - Curate your appendix. General links to entire databases can be overwhelming for students, so it's better to provide custom glossaries, or instruct students what to do with external links. - Incorporate live help somewhere in your course. Students often get stuck and need a quick way to problem-solve without having to book an appointment. Consider having "office hours" or responding to repeat messages with blog posts that you can turn into an FAQ.

Provide language alternatives for media used in e-learning based on the target group. One should consider offering language alternatives for multimedia content. If your course includes videos, webinars, or audio resources, then provide subtitles, voiceovers, or transcripts in different languages. This not only aids in comprehension but also addresses the different learning preferences of the learner. Some learners may find it easier to understand the spoken word in their native language, while others may prefer reading in a familiar language.

One thing to consider is if your course is in multiple languages, that the lms you use can accurately translate. Sometimes language doesn’t translate correctly so your data could be skewed. Thus, your feedback and insights could be incorrect over time.
