🎤 Navigating Artistic Direction and Vision Differences in Vocal Ensembles 🎶 As voice teachers, how do we handle conflicts related to artistic direction and vision differences within our vocal ensembles? 1️⃣ Respect Leadership: Recognize that the Artistic Director holds their position for a reason. Their vision guides the ensemble. 2️⃣ Open Communication: Encourage honest discussions about differing opinions, ensuring everyone feels heard. 3️⃣ Collaborative Spirit: Foster a collaborative environment where creative ideas can merge harmoniously. 4️⃣ Student Focus: Always prioritize the growth and well-being of our students, ensuring conflicts don’t hinder their progress.

Good sound in a vocal ensemble begins, not with sound, but a consistent approach to vowel work. If your ensemble is to sound its best they have to match vowels. Next is the ability to communicate ideas through the words given. Of course, pitch and listening to each other is very important. Yet, the mission is to help people to hear through clear vowel work. To bring the people to the message. The sound will be there if that is accomplished.

Democracy doesn't work in artistic projects for me. I'm open to suggestions, but in the end I'm the one that makes the dicisions.

We listen to people and we consider their thoughts. Sometimes we might just like their ideas. Other times we might be able to articulate why our ideas are important to us. Sometimes we might find that one part isn't as important to us and a compromise that pleases all is fine. If someone makes a suggestion, I say, "sure. Let's try it!" We might all like it better, or we might all say, "ew, no. Let's do it the other way." Art is fluid.

We do make sure everyone can express their opinions openly and respectfully, and we have an agreement that every opinion is explained well, not just based on personal feelings (“because I feel/think/want so”), hence we start with “why”. We also try out different ideas to see what works best. Although I as a leader make the final decision, I ensure that everyone largely agrees with it to maintain harmony in the group.

Developing a strong relationship with your group is helpful in resolving conflicts. If you know the people around you well, conflicts and even misunderstandings can easily be solved.
