The difference between a scheduled and an impromptu speech lies in the mental preparation and the time allocated to analyze the immediate needs of the audience. A professional speaker provides detailed answers to the client's fundamental questions at any time and in any context, knowing the client's professional life in detail. There's much to discuss, but I hope you understand that there are no unexpected difficult questions, only speakers who are unprepared on fundamental topics. For minor questions, the following answer is acceptable: I will return shortly with a well-founded response.

Pause. Breathe. Don't panic and don't be quick to speak/give up. You may know more than you think. If possible, ask for a repeat of the question. Then thank questioner for taking the time to ask the question. If the question is unrelated to your area of expertise, say that clearly and let them know you can provide some perspective within your limited scope later, via email or some other feasible means. However, if you are expected to know the answer, then let your brain kick in. Pick a word or two you know and let your mind start processing the question from there. I have questions that have been technical and have many parts. I am honest with the person. If there is something that I cannot answer because of legal or confidentiality reasons I say so. I had three part question once and my answer to it was that I could do the first thing as it was a no-brainer. The second one I said that he would have to work with us to fix it and the last one, I said we couldn't do it and why. After the meeting we met with him and fixed the first two. The worst answer is that "we will review it." That means nothing will be done and they know that and you lose any credibility that you had.

This! If you honestly do not know the answer then it is perfectly ok to say so. This will avoid you from giving an "my Oga at the top" answer i.e. deflecting in a way that makes you look ignorant. Rather, stay calm thank them for the question and explain that you will need get back to them with an appropriate answer or direct them to someone who can answer properly. If you have a general answer you can proffer it and promise to give more details later. No one has the fountain of all knowledge so even with diligent preparation when something outside your scope comes up it is ok to admit it...

💡 Being honest: To me no question is difficult if you know the real essence of it and how to respond e.i. Being 💯 honest. My audience tend not to put forth a question which they deem unreasonable that is a tough question simply because what I have done so far is to win the audience via clarity in my speech and true to my words. I have found my audience to better stay silent even they are not fully convinced that what I'm speaking about is correct or not. They either wait for me to clarfy more which most often they do and/or simply let the unconvincable matter go unclarified, guys this is the power of being honest. 💡 The Golden rule of honesty applies in all spheres of life let alone the stage, you win people's trust wherever you go.

Honesty here is such an underated response, because sometimes we are tempted to want to display our knowledge so as to gain relevance and status. The best approach I have found is to simply talk about how fascinating the question is and how you would also like to know more about the answer however with an assurance and you would love to get back to the question with an answer. But stick to it In recent times it is increasingly unlikely you can get away with a bluff, so don't try to impress anyone.

If you're unsure or don't know the answer to a question, it's okay to admit it rather than attempting to bluff or provide inaccurate information. Be human, right? We can't know everything all the time. And knowing that you are there to serve the audience means that you will work to give them the best experience. I've seen speakers in this situation try to assert their authority and it's not gone well. Just be human, honest and authentic. (Of course this is a skill to be worked on)

When it comes to difficult question, just be humble. If you can answer it eventhough you have to crack your head thinking about the answer, do it and let the answer flows smoothly. If you don’t know the answer, be honest to say you don’t know the answer and ask if the other participants know the answer. If not, take note of his/her name and contact and promise to get back to him/her when you have the answer.

In most cases, I've found questions fall into a small handful of categories. Define what those are or could be. For example, let's say you're speaking to a line plan, or project mock up, or a product set. You could anticipate questions in the following categories: - Time (for installation, go to market, implementation) - Money (cost of product, cost of installation, cost of goods, etc.) - People needed (buy-in needed, head count, additional team members, expert opinions, etc.) - The all important "why do we need this" Practice, out loud (and by yourself - you don't have to have an audience when you practice), your answers to some of these questions.

Of course, you are not obliged to respond to every question that is posed to you or grant authority to those who do so, but keep in mind that you also don't have to assume control over them; instead, exchange orally amicably.
