Context involves understanding the organization's mission, the environment it operates in, and the individuals within it. An effective leader not only comprehends these elements but also recognizes how they interact and influence one another.

I agree. This requires essential, intense, "back-office" sorts of effort that often is invisible to an outside observer. It is no less essential because it is not fully visible. There also must be an unwavering commitment to facts and accuracy. One must build trust. Then, take the initiative and run to the sound of the guns.

If you want to lead across boundaries and levels you need to respect the opinion of others and reflect on your own biases. Be aware of your own biases and preconceived notions that might influence how you perceive others' opinions. Take steps to challenge and expand your own perspectives. Respect the others by acknowledging their right to their opinion. Even if you disagree, recognize and acknowledge their right to hold their own opinion. Respect their autonomy and freedom of thought.

Building relationships is about establishing trust, fostering open communication, and appreciating individual strengths. Relationship-focused leaders are often more effective as they command respect, not just obedience.

Active listening means not thinking about what one is going to say while another is speaking. It helps to rephrase what was said, and ask your interlocutor if your understanding is accurate. Adjust your comprehension as necessary.

Organizations are just a bunch of people working toward a shared goal. The better relationships that you have the more opportunities you're going to get in order to achieve collective success. Being able to take the time to identify the types of people inside your organization you want to proactively build relationships with is a great opportunity for you to increase your ability to be an effective leader

Whether or not you are in a formal leadership position, the world of work today requires most of us to be able to get things done by working through, and with other people. This is especially true if you work in a large organization, or if you are in a role where you work on cross-functional teams. Being able to understand others, the collective north star, and then to use your influence, credibility, relationships, and capital to achieve a goal is critical to a critical leadership skill. This is true for formal leaders as much as it is true for informal leaders and everyday employees.

Relationships are an important factor in establishing credibility, forming alliances, collaborating, building trust, actively listening, demonstrating empathy, leading by example, and mastering effective communication. In my experience, leading by influence over authority is key. One of the most important factors is getting others to buy in to what you are trying to lead. Being passionate and enthusiastic is persuasive! If you truly believe what you are trying to lead others to is useful and will inspire positive change, and you have put in the effort and research to show it is valuable, it is very noticeable to others. People are more likely to listen to what you have to share and want to be a part of what you are driving.

Being able to "sense and respond" to emergent opportunities and challenges is a critical skill for any leader. Having that ability to "see around corners" can help you create opportunities to make an impact inside your organization. Doing this requires you to be in a constant state of reflective action - making time to slow down to observe and think about what is going on, and then the ability to identify the next steps that you can take to move the team forward or tackle a new opportunity

Adaptive leaders stay open-minded, ready to learn from successes and failures. By being flexible and promoting a learning culture within the team, leaders can navigate change more effectively and foster continuous growth.

Consider the role of emotional intelligence in leadership. This involves understanding and managing your emotions and those of your team.

I completely agree! Emotional Intelligence is a key area to begin developing within a company. Today’s educators are tasked with teaching social emotional skills to their students, and there are serious gaps between tomorrow’s employees and today’s employers. Many people equate emotional intelligence with only being empathetic and compassionate, but they often miss some of the key leadership skills like learning how to be flexible, to take initiative, be productive, and to think critically.
