How do you make your Machine Learning solutions more valuable?

One important point here is to bear in mind that stakeholders often have very limited idea about how machine learning works. In my experience many stakeholders fall into two main groups: the first that has no idea that their case can be solved using machine learning and the second that come to you with a half baked idea of a solution which often can be suboptimal if you look at the problem at hand more closely. That is why it is important to educate potential stakeholders about data science capabilities as well as to make sure that you understood the problem and that the proposed solution makes sense before jumping into implementation.

Yes, business goals to be well-understood by the developer at the initial stage. Many a times, client will not have a proper idea about what they want. In some cases, just a data analysis and drawing insights through visualization and hypothesis testing will be sufficient for them. So, it is the responsibility of the developer to understand the need of the client thoroughly and educate the client whether ML is required or not. Even if it is required, there are cases where simple linear model are best suited and easily deployable, compared to the complex models which will lead to overhead hardware cost for the client. So, knowing the capabilities of various models and choosing the right algorithm is also an important key.

One thing I totally believe in is any solution(ML/AI models) must come from a problem. We must not try to find a problem for the solution that we build. What I have witnessed with various teams is that they try to apply ML models to their products just because it's trending in the market. On reality, it might not require such ML solution at all. Always start with real world problem, discuss with all the stakeholders, define the expected output first. Then start trying and building the actual solution.

While it is important to address the business problem, it is also important to address the feasibility of the solution prior to development. It is often the case where clients believe that AI works like "magic" and can reach any goal, often without significant investment in hardware resources. It is important to clarify the feasibility of not just reaching the solution, but the compute and latency requirements for deploying the solution into production. A near-perfect deep learning model with a latency of 1 second is virtually useless when deployed on an autonomous vehicle.

Absolutely, creating valuable Machine Learning solutions requires bridging the gap between technical and business aspects. To achieve this, collaboration with domain experts and stakeholders is vital. From the perspective of deep learning models, there are very few insights available on how the performance of a model depends on the topology of the network and the selection of training data. Else whatever deductions we make from the results won't be very reliable.

From my perspective, the realm of Machine Learning is an extraordinarily dynamic domain. It stands as possibly the most rapidly advancing field in recorded history. A multitude of research papers inundates platforms like arXiv daily, spanning all facets of ML. It becomes paramount to possess the capability to read, comprehend, and maintain awareness of the most recent strides in ML research.

Machine Learning has taken over the industry. People are finding it's applications in fields where noone even expected. During my MS in Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras I performed Molecular Dynamics Simulations to understand the nature and behaviour of polymers in depth. I worked with polymer chains having two moieties, and calculated the sequence dependent polymer polymer properties like surface tension, radius of gyration, etc. Now a polymer sequence mostly has no mathematical correlation with these properties but using deep learning, we were able to build predictive models that can predict these properties for unknown sequences. Its amazing to see the potential ML holds, we just have to learn to harness it.
