How do you prepare for an internship interview and showcase your skills and fit?

In my experience, when I am interviewing for an internship position and the individual has done their research on my organization, it tells me that they are eager to learn, willing to go "above and beyond" in their role, and they care about the mission of the organization. Most importantly if the individual knows the business' mission/values and it aligns with their personal mission/values, it is usually a great internship experience for both parties.

To prepare for an internship interview, research the company, review the job description, identify your skills, practice common interview questions, prepare examples, showcase your fit, ask thoughtful questions, dress appropriately, and be punctual and professional. Highlight relevant experiences, demonstrate enthusiasm, and express your willingness to learn and contribute. Practice articulating your responses confidently and concisely to make a strong impression.

I would add to all of the contributions that your interview starts before the actual call/in-person. Make sure you research not just by checking their website but investigating their projects/their charitable work etc. Review the job description against your skills but against what they do and find gaps or questions to ask. Make sure as well that you are in contact as well. I have had people for internships who don't show up and give no notice. This does not bode well for gaining another chance from employers. If something is coming up that you can't change, notify the employer and provide alternatives to show you care and are professional.

Look into internship intermediaries such as Year Up that might help you open the doors at companies you wouldn’t otherwise have open doors at. Don’t be afraid to work with nonprofits to help you open new doors!
