How do you use GIS to investigate a site?

GIS helps in identifying suitable locations for various projects by considering various factors like proximity to resources, environmental impact, and regulatory constraints. These factors are guide by the objectives set for the project.

I've used GIS to overlay subsurface data with historical parcel maps to help find the potential source of contamination. It's a very powerful tool for site investigation and conceptual site modeling.

Defining and writing the objectives works as a useful exercise, through which each objective makes sense by understanding what the consecutive steps will be and the tools that are necessary, in each step, to solve the problems related to the fulfillment of each objective.

A better understanding of the area under study, it's culture and governing laws will greatly assist in establishing an informed investigation.

GIS aids and investigate in mapping terrain, assessing environmental factors, and visualizing spatial relationships. Through spatial analysis, GIS helps identify patterns, plan optimal locations, and make informed decisions for effective site investigation.

An important aspect to consider is that -initially- we must investigate which are the sources from which the data we need will come. In this way, we can generate a list of sources with their characteristics (which must include accessibility), to focus on each one according to the amount of time they require to obtain the information that has been determined necessary for compliance with the objectives.

It is advisable that when collecting data you use tools and methods you understand best. Integration of Datasets should be carried out after atleast drawing out a conclusion from the primary data collected.

GIS analysis requires knowledge of geostatistical tools, but mainly of basic spatial analysis tools. Therefore, it is recommended that the user clearly define the type of process that will require its analysis and the steps that it involves.

It is necessary for the user to read and investigate the principles of cartographic design, considering key aspects such as contrast, the size of elements, typography and the use of colors and shapes. The use of supporting elements such as photographs and graphics should not diminish the importance of the central element: the cartographic map.

The most important aspect to consider for the communication of results in GIS is that the presentation of these must be governed by the principles of accessibility and easy reading. the best design is the one that is simplest and most understandable.
