How does HTTP support RESTful API design?

In building integrations I never use the DELETE method as it is dangerous to automatically delete a record without a user confirmation or involvement.

PUT & PATCH methods are the most interesting ones. Because both of them are used to update records. PUT endpoints are usually implemented in a way that the user request determines the end state of record but in case of PATCH, user’s request and current state of record determines the end state. While this is not a compulsion, it is a convention that makes integrations convenient.

HTTP methods are just a way for you to talk to an endpoint with simple instructions for it to act when authenticated correctly. If you want to ask for something, use GET, Remove something, or DELETE.

Additional codes include 204 No Content for successful processing with no response body, 302 Found indicating temporary resource relocation, and 429 Too Many Requests for exceeding request limits. These numeric indicators facilitate a quick understanding and effective response to the results of HTTP transactions.

The 500 Internal Server Error status code is particularly useful when encountering subtle issues like accessing the wrong path (e.g., opening a CSV file via a Flask API) with no visible errors. It also helps identify permission-related challenges, such as running out of allocated requests while testing code, signaling that the code is error-free but constrained by permissions.

406: Not Acceptable It holds significant importance in REST architectural patterns. It occurs when a server cannot provide the requested format specified by the client, resulting in a failure to respond accordingly. 422: Unprocessable Entity It becomes relevant when a request contains data that doesn't adhere to predefined standards. For instance, in a signup form requiring a username, password, and phone number, if the essential fields (username, password, phone number) are missing, the response should be 400 Bad Request. However, if all fields are present, but the password doesn't meet the specified standards (like requiring at least one numeric and one special character), the server would appropriately return a status code 422.

Http headers are like little packed suitcases of information that travel alongside the request and response to share useful details between the client asking for data, and the server providing it. Let's take an example: Headers like Auth token, API key enables stateless client-server interactions by providing context for each discrete request. Headers like Cache-Control, ETag enables caching mechanisms - saving bandwidth and improving performance. Accept and Content-Type headers allows smooth introduction of new representation formats.

Http body is the actual information being sent from the client to the server or vice versa. It generally includes standard data formats like JSON, and XML providing common ground for communication between different. However, it can also carry binary data, such as images or files. Moreover, It can be formatted as a multipart, allowing for the transmission of multiple types of data in a single request.

JSON, a data format, offers advantages like smaller file sizes for faster data transfer and cleaner, more readable structures. In contrast, XML, a markup language, is known for its complexity and larger file sizes. Despite being 'old,' XML's intricate structure enables detailed data processing and formatting, with self-describing documents linked to schemas for added versatility.

The HTTP body contains the data being sent in the request or response. In a request, it often includes data to be processed by the server. In a response, it carries the requested information or acknowledgment. The format of the body is determined by the `Content-Type` header, commonly in JSON or XML for structured data.

HTTP body is nothing but a paylaod which will be sent as part of a request which can be sent across metods like GET, POST, PUT. HTTP body can accept JSON data, XML data and form data based approach which is handled using BLOB. But what if the size of the request body is too large?You can think of it as implementing bus transport. If 1000 people are waiting for bus to go to a single place and each bus capacity is 100, you have two options, get a really large bus or get multiple busses. The latter seams a better and practical option. Same goes for HTTP body as well, if the body is too large then instead of sending the whole body in one single request, open a stream connection and send in chunks. Also you can compress the body using gzip.

Ah the good old Get and Post methods. I used to work extensively with PHP handling of HTTP and those variables associated with these 2 request types made life so much easier to debug the algorithm or application or client-server interface.

JWT is the basic for Restful requests. JWT have information about: * users * ttl for login users * other metadata like: roles, clients, ... Other security mechanism is: * tls * cache control * browser storage security * preventing from iframe * preventing from listing directory And so on

One thing to consider is not just the security of the transport, but that the data coming in may be malicious, and your server may be serving thousands of users. Keep all your libraries up to date and follow CVEs. Consider all data coming in to be hostile. Check out the OWASP top 10. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Once, users faced challenges navigating a RESTful API, struggling with unclear available actions. The solution? Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State (HATEOAS). At the end of the day REST is a philosophy around the design of an API. It utilizes HTTP - the real protocol here - to accomplish the goals. There are no real standards around REST. REST is about architecture. REST is about resources in their current state. REST may not be suitable for all application designs. Other methods of developing APIs using HTTP is with GraphQL or patterns such as CQRS - Command Query Responsibility Separation.
