The dilemma should not exist. Education must align with market demands. There are many of issues than come with that: - Internships should be part of the curricula. - Large projects and extracurricular activities should be encouraged as well. - Curricula has to be flexible enough for the market to express itself. In Europe and Latin America the curricula tends to be fixed, producing in this way standardized professionals. This is an anti-market approach. Each professional/job/business is unique. The students (market) are the best judge to decide the classes they need to become the best professional they can be (the best fit for a market need).

Part of the conversation needs to be some mutual self-educating. The values of both parties (traditionally & over-simplistically) are that industry wants workers and HE develops researchers. Truthfully, HE develops individuals far beyond subject matter. Key transferable skills are at the core of HE, highly valuable to industry. To ensure that mutual understanding, more partnerships: maintain academic integrity in curriculum but incorporate more real world, industry cases. Create more credit-based industry opportunities via internships, case studies. Develop curricula that mirrors workplace settings (group work, dynamic deliverables beyond papers). Integrating career development in HE is key; career ed should be a requirement for any degree.

By establishing industrial collaborations that emphasise consultancy projects and internships, we create pathways for students to gain real-world experience and apply theoretical knowledge practically. These projects are carefully designed to reinforce critical thinking, innovation, and ethical decision-making, aligning with our academic values. Regular dialogue with industry partners helps us set clear expectations and maintain a shared commitment to both educational outcomes and professional standards, ensuring that students benefit from a well-rounded, values-driven experience.

Faculty members should share with students that many of the skills they develop by completing their academic work are relevant in the workplace. Students often complete their degrees without realizing how this prepared them for work. Institutions and employers should also open communication channels that allow for periodic discussions on how students are doing in the workforce and what can be done to better prepare them for the transition.
