In the field of injection molding and automation inspection 3D printing will give you an advantage in shorter lead time builds. Typically we would wait for the molded parts to test and approve any automation builds. Maybe a nest or probe holder would need to be redesigned to preform better. But, with the addition of 3D printing we would print the molded part to test out the automation live. This saved us weeks of waiting for molded parts to be made. If a part in the system needed to be made over we would qualify it first by 3D printing it, testing the automation then machining the metal replacement to the cad data we printed. We now do this for all end of arm tooling too.
