In my experience, extensively using network monitoring tools for security, and network attack detections. The best monitoring tools are comprised of 3 components. The "sniffer" the tool that actually captures the packets off the wire for analysis. The "protocol analyzer" which interprets the contents of the packets. Lastly, the Visualization. Presenting the information to you in a way that is useful. All 3 are equally useful for network administration, as security. Some of the best tools I have used are Arkime, Security Onion, and Elasticsearch with Packetbeat.
