Patent landscaping gives you good overview what are the newest development trends in the industry but also what are new opportunities for you as there might be certain gaps which have not been utilized yet.

We can always start with a Google search (I am always amazed at how many inventors and founders fail to do so). Then, there are other online tools, such as Google Patents and other patent search tools. If you are really focused on finding a gap, then hiring a patent attorney is the best option: they can see things that we would miss and make recommendations. Based on those recommendations, then we can design and innovate.

I use both, but for most people a Google Patents search is more intuitive. For the vending idea, start by searching for the keyword "vending" and read some patents to get an idea of the typical language used in that field. Then add keywords which representing your inventive detail to narrow down the search. Consult a patent attorney if you pursue the idea further.

It's so important to gather insight before deciding whether to pursue a technology or specific IP filing. If you don't have a market or there is overlapping tech, it may make sense to move on to other opportunities. This especially true if budgets and resources are limited.

Analysises can provide you crucial information also about upcoming market trends and which direction you should be taking in order to stay on top, how you align compered to competitors and how well your innovation projects are answering your potential customers's needs compared to your competitors.

Before a company sets out to gather competitive intelligence, I recommend selecting the right people for the job. Find one or more subject matter experts at your company who may already have experience or understanding of the competitor product. That isn't a substitute for gathering competitive intelligence, but it will accelerate the process and increase the quality. Also keep in mind the importance of gathering information from many angles. Are you researching a competitive product? Go into a store to buy the product. What was that experience like? Did the competitor product stand out? Why? Use the product. Read reviews. Ask friends why they bought it. Read the instruction manual. Watch videos about how to use it. Immerse yourself!

Often the first step is to do more research to see if anyone has filed patents on the idea or if a company has already created a product or service similar to the idea. Doing a general Google search is a critical first step. Don't just look at the first few hits – dig deep. Use variations of keywords, and change the keywords as your review the pages from the search. If your idea survives that search, go on to a Google Patents search and do some competitive intelligence gathering. Did something similar to your idea pop up? Don't panic. Think about new variations of your idea and keep inventing!

Unless you have experience doing this, I would recommend reaching out to someone who does this as part of their patent research services. Or talk with a patent attorney and get a recommendation for someone who can do this work. AI will eventually be used to create patent landscapes, but I don't think that capability is available yet (Dec 2023). Then again, given the speed of AI progress it may be here next week. :)

One fundamental question is going to get murkier and murkier: Who are my competitors? That may seem obvious, but advanced technologies are allowing new competitors to jump in with less capital required and fewer employees. They are going to move fast and disrupt existing competitors. New technologies are also going to allow products and services to be delivered and consumed in radically different ways. Pricing is going to change. While you may be competitive on price with a competitor, what happens when AI enters the market and a new entrant gives away the service that you charge for? Everyone may be a competitor soon.
